American Idol 7

It was disco night, but oddly enough few of the Idols did disco renditions of their chosen songs. Instead, most of them altered their songs to be more personal to their style and in most cases it worked really well.

First up was Lil Rounds doing “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan. I don’t really feel that’s a disco song as it came after disco. And it doesnt have a disco beat. But anyway, she did a good job. The problem is, the judges berated her for not making it her own. Simon said she’s out tomorrow. We’ll see.

Kris did a magnificently original take on Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money” on an acoustic guitar. Both I and the judges really loved it. While it did not get called the best of the night. I preferred it over Adam’s song because it seemed more real to me. Kris seems more like a natural guy, very unpretentious, yet very sure of himself and original. I think he really stepped up his game tonight.

Danny Gokey did Earth Wind and Fire’s “September” with the usual professional and pitch perfect styling. The guy is a real pro. Simon felt his performance wasn’t great. I don’t look at it as harshly as Simon, but I do think he is weaker than Adam in that department. But Danny is a masterful singer.

Allison did a very interesting version of Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff”. Once again, if you did not know she was 16, you’d think she was a confident 30 year old veteran of music. She is amazing.

Adam did the “If I Can’t Have You” from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack as a very impassioned, almost pleading version. It really moved the judges and the audience. I thought it was great, but I prefer Kris’s cover because Adam is very theatrical which either works for you for not. I’m more into the music than the performance. But whatever, Adam is safe. It’ll be him against someone else in the finals fpr sure unless there is a surprise upset like there was with Chris Daughtry. I don’t think they will allow that this time, though.

Matt did “Staying Alive” which is a good choice for Idol because the song’s title and lyrics can sometimes work to the psychology of the judges and the audience. He got general praise by Simon dissed him. I thought it was good but not as inspired as the one’s before.

Finally, Anoop did “Dim All the Lights” by Donna Summer. Again, his own version. Very, very good. I didn’t like the way it ended. But all the judges love dit except Simon who said it wa one of Anoop’s worst. I have no idea what his problem is, but I think he was trying to hurt the chances of the people he likes the least.

The judges seem to have given up on Lil Rounds, as they have not given her any props in weeks. So she may be out tomorrow. My guess is Matt will go with her. Or Anoop. My money’s on Matt.

UPDATE:
Well, it was Anoop and Lil Rounds. Matt seems to have a resurgence of popularity. I can’t believe Allison was in the bottom 3. She may not be as secure as I thought. I can’t believe some of the sites calling America racist because they voted off the dark skinned contestants. I mean, Allison is Hispanic, even though she’s not that dark. Probably because she stays out of the sun. But seriously, several sites I checked are making the racist claim. Stupid.
