Apple's iPad is Here

The specs.

It think it looks great. It’s basically a large iPhone. It runs that operating system (OS). And they were very wise to keep the price point down.

They will manage to do really well for a year or two. But don’t be shocked wen others release their versions, using Google’s Android OS, or Google’s Chome OS. Since Google’s stuff us open source, it should take over the market share unless Apple switches their policies, which I doubt.

But anyway, this is where publishing will go to be “saved.” I will write more on this at Big Journalism.

UPDATE: Here is my post.

  1. I still think it’s too pricey and frankly the storage capacity is a joke for anybody who seriously uses video… (Does this thing even DO video???)

Storage capacity is far too low IMHO for the introductory model, period.

IF and when these things get down to $250 and have 64GB or better memory AND clearly are here to stay, then maybe I’ll bite.

This is clearly for the Apple hardcore and people who have to be the first kid on the block to own a new toy.

Pass until at least Round 2, 3, maybe even 4.

I agree that unless Apple is smart they’ll eventually cede this new technical field to another company within a few years. This is NOT the iPod… and frankly I don’t think the iPhone/iTouch is that good, either. I hate exclusivity and locked-out systems!

I’m also NOT convinced it will save comics, period. The industry isn’t that smart and I think we’re well past the point of return when the industry will ever see averages of over a quarter-million UNIQUE people for a given monthly anymore. The profitability of monthlies just isn’t there and they don’t seem to be interested in gaining new readership or retaining the dwindling number of people who actually still buy monthlies… Not that the dark storylines, never-ending crossover series, and buddy-buddy relationship with Hollywood writers is encouraging new readership to jump on-board.

This may help newspapers and magazines that take advantage of the technology and figure out a reasonable subscription plan but otherwise I fail to see Marvel or DC taking advantage of it. They’re too cautious and inbred to be that courageous.

I doubt that these other tablets will measure up, and the iPad will dominate this market segment, because it’s redefining it as one for the general public, not computer enthusiasts. The general public couldn’t give a rat’s behind if a given system is “Open Source” or not.

I would like to see comics published in Apple’s new iBookstore, but with all the 3rd party systems out there, I fear that comics may be self-ghettoizing themselves, serving only the same old audience.

  3. Well, consumers will care when the Google powered devices are cheaper and have more apps. Already Andriod phones are eating into the iphone market share. Partially because iPhone is so locked into one carrier. And also because Apple has proprietary formats or DRM.

But I’m not knocking them. They are a leader in the tech biz and this is another coup for them. A lot of resistance out there from what I’ve been reading, but I think it will win people over in time,
