Ramsey’s Scrambled Eggs

For me, the most entertaining show on Tuesday right now isn’t American Idol. It’s Hell’s Kitchen, where Gordon Ramsey play’s drill instructor to a bunch of chefs who want to win a job working for him. Here’s the chef showing how he makes scrambled eggs.

Vertical Farming

I first heard of vertical farming a few years ago, when I learned that they use them in the Netherlands where space is limited. The idea is, you stack one farm on top of the other like a parking garage. On one level you have animals, the waste is used to fertilize the other layers. Something like that is great because it’s self contained and efficient. The following article shows how they could be done inside cities which think is a great idea. If you want to buy local growers farmer’s market food, this is one way to do it. Not only that, it adds more green spaces to a city environment.

Of course, city space is at a premium in most cities and the land is expensive, so I don’t know how practical it is. It certainly, it’s worth a try.

Who Owns Organic Companies

This chart will show you which corporation owns which “organic” brand. You;’d be surprised.

On one hand, corporations have the ability to get products wide distribution and it’s good that they’re producing minimally or non-processed foods to the market. But you should know who you’re dealing with.

I’m not one of these corporations = evil type people, but I am more supportive of smaller businesses and my big problem with major food companies is they deal in short cuts and methods which minimize a level of quality that only fresh ingredients can provide.

Processed foods have their place, but nothing is better than fresh. And many of these “organic” foods aren’t too fresh.

I really take offense at the prices of Coca-Cola’s Odwalla brand, which is insane. You want to talk about price gouging. At my local deli, they charge close to five dollars for a little bottle or orange juice. Please.

Health Food

It’s been probably 25 years or more since I had a bag of Fritos. Then, onday they had a bunch of various chips at my office. So I grabbed a bag of Fritos and was amazed how much better they tasted than the other ones they had.

Now I know why. Less is more. And a lot healthier.

Foodsel

This new site has a very interesting way to show you what you are eating. By doing it visually with graphs and example icons, you can see what the ratio of sugar, fat and energy a food provides. Then it shows you what exercises would be needed to burn it off.

For example, this is how much sugar, energy and fat found in a strawberry pop tart (unfrosted):

image

A serving of 100g contains 394kcal, representing ± 15.7 batteries*.

image

A serving of 100g contains 33.00g sugars, which is comparable to ± 7.4 sugar cubes.

image

A serving of 100g contains 10.50g fat, which is comparable to ± 0.1 butter sticks.

Then it tells you how much energy you need for gender and age per day.

Very handy for a dieter.

More Awful Eats

These foods will kill you, but people around the world line up to eat them.

Better to eat one of these sandwiches. The only thing you have to worry about is the calories or cholesterol. I intend to check out the Cuban place in Seattle the next time I am up there.
