Tasty Chinese Food

Here’s some assorted Chinese treats found in an Asian food store. There’s nothng like some curried water bugs to make your day.

Make sure you order one of these so you can play with your food.

Pizza Hut’s Cheese Isn’t Cheese

Just as some fast food places use beef patties or meat that lacks a lot of real meat, it seems Pizza Hut uses a silicone based chemical substance in its “cheese”. Ugh.

I’ve learned years ago to stay away from processed food. It’s generally bad for you in all sorts of ways, not just in weight gain. Not to mention that it usually doesn’t hold a candle in flavor to good home cooking with fresh ingredients.

UPDATE: Milkweed offers a retraction. Still, the cheese on some of these megachain’s pizzas is pretty bad.

Enjoy Your Foie Gras Now

Chef and TV Personality Anthony Bourdain holds forth on how nanny stateism is starting to dictate what we are allowed to eat. It’s only just getting started but the implications are bad news.

Eat Your Bacon

Here’s another story that reverses another claim about food.

Eating nitrite/nitrate-rich foods such as vegetables and cured meats may help improve the chances of surviving a heart attack and of recovering more quickly.

That’s the finding of a preliminary study in the Nov. 12 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers found that mice fed extra nitrite and nitrate had 48 percent less cell death in the heart following a heart attack than mice fed a regular diet. Mice fed a low nitrite/nitrate diet had 59 percent greater cell death.

One week that say it’ll kill you, the next it will save your life. Sheesh!

Miracle fruit

Now this sounds interesting. I’d love to try this.

At a party here one recent Friday, Jacob Grier stood on a chair, pulled out a plastic bag full of small berries, and invited everyone to eat one apiece. “Make sure it coats your tongue,” he said.

Mr. Grier’s guests were about to go under the influence of miracle fruit, a slightly tart West African berry with a strange property: For about an hour after you eat it, everything sour tastes sweet.

Within minutes of consuming the berries, guests were devouring lime wedges as if they were candy. Straight lemon juice went down like lemonade, and goat cheese tasted as if it was “covered in powdered sugar,” said one astonished partygoer. A rich stout beer seemed “like a milkshake,” said another.

Congrats, Michael Symon

I’m a big fan of the Iron Chef show. They just finished the Next Iron Chef series and Michael Symon, from Cleveland, won. You can watch all the episodes here.

I had been rooting for Symon from about the second episode. I used to watch his show Melting Pot and always liked his funny laugh and good character. I had a feeling the combination of his persona and professionalism would help him win the day.

Symon won 4 of the episodes of a six-part series. It should have been a lock. While his competitors were good, John Besh seemed to be is closest match, and indeed, he finished second. I was disappointed that Chef Morou didn’t last longer since he seemed the most creative. But they got him on his fussy plating style. He doesn’t like his food to touch.

Anyway, I like the Food Network because there’s no politics. It’s educational. I’ve learned to eat a lot better and cook better and it’s made a difference in my life.

It’s also nice to watch something where people get along and work together on something. What a rarity these days.

Bento!

image

One of the things I like about Japan is how they organize things in an artistic way. When I was a kid, living in Hawaii, I got my first exposure to Japanese culture and I was fascinated with the school lunches some of the Japanese kids who came to school had. It wasn’t until years later that I found out the word for these artful lunch boxes is Bento.

Here’s a site showing lots of examples of artistic Bento boxes. Awesome.
