How to Waste Money the Hollywood Way

Anti-war movies have never been big money makers. Just as the anti-war movement has never been that big, except in their minds. They were supposed to be at their peak in the early 70s when Vietnam was still going. Yet their W of the day, Richard Nixon, was reelected by a landslide.

Still believing their own hype as they advance into old age, the baby boomer peaceniks are getting a shot of reality as they try to make America look bad with War on Terror films.

The wave of recent films set against the backdrop of war in Iraq and post-9/11 security has failed to win over film-goers keen to escape grim news headlines when they go to the movies, analysts say.

In a break with past convention, when films based on real conflicts were made only years after the last shots were fired, several politically-charged films have gone on release while America remains embroiled in Iraq.

Almost without exception, however, the crop of movies have struggled to turn a profit at the box-office and in many cases have received a mauling from unimpressed critics as well.

No one is biting because they can hear this crap for free on any MSM channel. It’s not a popular message there, either. Fox News is the one news channel that actually issues positive stories about the war, when it has some, and they are doing much better than the failing CNN and the moribund MSNBC.

Anti-war rallies have been weak lately. And things are starting to look better in Iraq. So negativity just ain’t selling.

Besides, it’s a rule of thumb that negativity isn’t popular. People want to hear good news, not bad. They want to see us win, not lose.

Too many Hollywood types are addicted to depression. Paranoia and self righteousness are not qualities people find appealing in others, yet it seems to be stock in trade with Gulfstream liberal film makers.

Not only is their message redundant and unoriginal, it’s not even selling. The public already made up its mind and they don’t need a bunch of people with zero credibility telling them what the “truth” is.

By the way, Bush only has a year and six weeks left. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long before Hollywood gets a clue.

The Writer’s Strike Explained

Without writers there would be no movies or TV shows. Hence, nothing is being made right now. All shows have stopped.

Writers are consistently mistreated and underpaid by Hollywood. What the writers want in this strike is not unreasonable. Yet the studios are fighting giving up one thin dime.

I doubt of this strike will change things all that much, other than getting a few more pesos in the writers deals, but the whole system over there needs an overhaul. It is grossly unfair. Why should producers get paid millions, often for just having their name on a film, when the film wouldn’t even exist of a writer or writers hadn’t dreamed it up? Why should actors get the money they do when their acting would be worthless without a good script? If a star can get $20 million a picture, the writers shold at least get a million for the same picture. At least!

Goodbye, Miss Moneypenny

image

Lois Maxwell, who starred as Miss Moneypenny in 14 James Bond movies, has died, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported Sunday. She was 80.

The Canadian-born actress starred alongside Sean Connery in the first James Bond movie, “Dr. No,” in 1962 as the secretary to M, the head of the secret service.

She died Saturday night at Fremantle Hospital near her home in Perth, Australia, the BBC cited a hospital official as saying.

Bond star Roger Moore said she was suffering from cancer.

All the original cast members, except Connery, are gone.

Dolt of the Day

What a way to win back the public!

Steven Seagal, whose action movies once were major box-office attractions, believes false allegations by FBI agents ruined his career, the Los Angeles Times reported on Friday.

The comments in the Times are the first Seagal has made publicly about an investigation begun some five years ago by the FBI into accusations he intimidated a reporter and had ties to organized crime.

The Times said Seagal is demanding an apology from the FBI. A spokesman for the actor was not immediately available on Friday.
