The Arrow of Time

A family photographs themselves every year for 30 years. Watch them age (gracefully, I might add).

Chris Sligh

image

Sure, he made the famous quip that he wanted to make David Hasselhoff cry, but Greenville’s own Chris Sligh says he never really wanted to win “American Idol”—and, in fact, even considered quitting two weeks before television viewers sent him packing.

“I never came into this wanting to win it,” Sligh said Thursday in a telephone interview, a day after being voted off and finishing tenth in the wildly popular singing competition. “I made the Top Ten. That was my goal.”

Two weeks ago, after scathing criticism for his re-arrangement of Diana Ross’ classic ballad “Endless Love,” the 28-year-old Bob Jones and North Greenville universities alum began to question whether his roots in indie, alternative pop-rock fit with the blueprint of “American Idol.”

“When I was pretty much universally trashed for my arrangement of ‘Endless Love,’ I kind of thought, ‘You know? This isn’t really the competition for me,’” Sligh said. “Actually, I almost dropped out that week.”

I liked Chris, except he stopped being funny, which was one of his strengths. He has a great voice. I never expected him to win, either, though.

I didn’t know, until his exit interview on idol extra that he was a hardcore X-ian. But that’s OK, he isn’t one of those boring scolds who always get trotted out as an example of Christians. The Jesus Camp types. Though he did say his parents wouldn’t let him listen to any pop music growing up. he heard his first CD when he was 18. And it was No Doubt.

BS of the Day

Not that this guy is part of any brain trust. But this typifies the gulf stream liberal hypocrisy of the GW crowd and this is just one of many reasons to mock them rather than listen to anything they have to say.

It’s the height of arrogance and navel gazing to lecture people on the environment and how they should live their lives when you are so freakin’ clueless (hello, Al Gore!).

All Known Bodies

All the known bodies in the solar system larger than 200 miles in diameter. With pictures.

You have to scroll sideways on the page. But it’s very cool.

Floating City 2000

When I was in high school, I used to design futuristic cities. These were the days before compute games like Sim City.

I used to imagine how the city would function, how to make it work better than a normal city and so on. It was fun, but now I realize how off I was in some of my ideas. Kind of like this imagined futuristic floating city. It’s more of an Arcology than a city, But it’s kind of cool in that retro way.

It’s funny how similar it looks to the arcology exaqmple picture on that Wikipedia article.

Rudy Ad

I normally don’t endorse politicians, but I think Rudy Giuliani is the best man for the job that I’ve seen right now. he has the leadership qualities. He has the track record. He has the communication skills a president needs. And as we’ve seen with Bush, they are greatly needed.

I don’t agree with him on everything, but that’s true of any politician. However, he did a couple of wonderful things as mayor of New York. He tamed an tamable city and he showed great leadership under 9/11 from the get go. He’s a take charge kind of leader and he gets the job done. He’s also a fiscal conservative and we really need that after Bush.

I know many people have issues with the man. I hear you. But of the people we’ve seen so far, only Fred Thompson is an alternative I could get behind and he isn’t running yet.  I still favor Giuliani because he’s actually proven his leadership skills under fire. So I’ll be running a campaign banner on the right for awhile.

This one.
