A Great Day for France

The end of a long era. Socialists are out in France. A conservative is in.

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy has won the French presidential election, according to projections made from partial results.

Mr Sarkozy is estimated to have won 53% of the vote, compared to 47% for socialist Segolene Royal.

The turnout was the highest in decades at 85.5%.

Mr Sarkozy, the son of a Hungarian immigrant, takes over from the 74-year-old Jacques Chirac, who has been in power for 12 years.

The socialists really let France go to the dogs. And the people knew it. Even though France is a pretty left wing country, it’s obvious that the majority have realized their mistake in trusting socialists all this time. Sarkozy offers a new direction for France. He wants to make it more freewheeling and prosperous like the US, which means he will eliminate a lot of the anti-capitalist measures and laws that the socialists imposed. This will mean a lot more jobs will be created which should go a long way to calming down the restless youth population.

He should also be the best French ally the US has had since DeGalle. Maybe since Lafayette.

UPDATE: More on his win

“The French have chosen to break with the ideas, habits and behaviour of the past,” he said. “I will restore the value of work, authority, merit and respect for the nation.”

He would also rid France of its habit of “repenting” for its past historical sins. “This repentance is a form of self-hatred,” he said.

That’s something we need more of here, also.

  1. I’m also happy that Sarko won—yes, he is conservative where it counts (immigration, war on terror, capitalism) but have you heard his positions on gun ownership or global warming? In these regards, he is as liberal as they come.

  2. Hey, you gotta start somewhere after God knows how many years of Socialism they had there.

  3. You can’t win them all. I never expected things to change for gun rights in France of all places. Global Warming is the cliched politician issue of the moment.

The important thing is he has been a hard ass on radical Muslim immigrants. And his head is in the right place in the war on terror (even though he didn’t support the ousting of Saddam)

  4. “Conservative” in France still seems to be somewhere to the left of Hillary, but it sounds like Sarko is conservative in all the right ways. Looks like there’s hope for Europe yet after enough have seen what socialism does to your economy. He does seem to be friendlier toward America; it will be nice to have an ally again after Chirac’s outright opposition to anything we do.

Look for the leftists in France to start complaining about how Sarko has “divided the country” right about…now.

  5. Watch for where the welfare leeches run to next…

  6. Europe is going to have to get a handle on it’s social services. Whenever a country creates great social services for its citizens, illegal aliens will migrate there to sponge off the state. That includes the US.

It’s human nature. If you live in a crappy country where there is no work and a lot of violence, it’s easy to understand why people go to places like Sweden and sponge off the state there. The problem is, it’s bringing down those places. The crime goes way up and services, paid for by high taxes from the working citizens, gets stretched thin.

We’ll see what Sarkozy actually does, but if he really reforms welfare there, it might send a signal to the rest of Europe to follow suit.

But in France, Unions are very powerful and regularly shut down things. He will have a big fight on his hands.
