A Great Day for the Constitution

Hopefully, this will shut up all those whiners who claim the second amendment doesn’t support the right to bear arms. Those people, by the way, were deluding themselves. Now we know it for a fact

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices’ first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

The court’s 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban on handguns as incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment.

Self defense is a basic human right. Any society that blocks a person’s right to defend themselves is oppressive. That goes for you, England.

When so called liberals claim that people should not be allowed to own guns, they prove they’re not liberals. A true liberal doesn’t block a person’s liberties. They defend them.

Guns level the playing field, Hence a small woman can scare off a big mugger by showing him she’s carrying. And the fact is, many crimes are prevented by someone just showing they have a gun.

Yes, there are fools who don’t handle guns properly or put them away properly in a house with children. There will always be idiots and the careless. And accidents do happen with guns even with people who are careful. But people die from falls more than gunshots. There are many other things people die from more than gunshots. It’s always been disingenuous to pick on guns when we know the problem is from some people. A gun is harmless on it’s own until someone uses it badly. The same goes for knives and cars and baseball bats.

The bottom line is, we now know where the supreme court stands. That does not mean the gun haters won’t try to get this overturned like some keep trying to get Roe vs Wade overturned. But it’s going to be an almost pointless fight because most Americans want the right to bear arms. This is why the NRA has had millions of members and the biggest anti gun groups have only had thousands of members at best.

  1. This one never should have had to go all the way to the US Supreme Court.  Jeeze, talk about stupid people. The day a gum jumps out of a cabinet or drawer, loads itself, points itself at a human and discharges itself, THEN I’ll agree that we need gun control.

  2. Some good (right to keep and bear, right to have in useable [no gun lock requirement, leave it up to the owner] form) some less so (seems every other amendment applies to all governments [most often via #14] but Second only applies to Federal and thus indrectly to the District) portions.

  3. All state and local laws or constitutions are subservient to the US constitution, in that the US Constitution establishes the country and the rule of law. All others have to work under its framework.

So all states and cities have to abide by this ruling. I hope cities like New York and Chicago get the message.

  4. To uphold the DC ban is to conclude that 9 of the first ten ammendments deal with the individuals protection FROM the government and one, the second, dealt with government rights.

Ridiculous.  It’s a question nobody wants to consider.

  5. What frightens me is that the decision was 5 to 4….......that means there are 4 “justices” that would have thrown out the 2nd Amendment!!!! My God! We stand on a razor’s edge.

  6. smilingdog, note it was 5-4 on striking down DC`s law or returning it to lower court: while the dissenters grumbled that they wish the authors had reserved the right to government with citizens being granted a privilege by officials, they admitted that the right is individual rather than collective. In other words, UNANIMOUS.
