American Idol: 3/13/2007

Last night’s show, despite having Diana Ross as the guest mentor, was not very inspiring. Only three of the contestants stood out, the usual suspects: Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin. There rest were OK to eh.

So I wasn’t too enthused about writing this post and it’s anyone’s guess who will get booted tonight. I suspect Sanjaya will skate again, jeri curls and all. Even though he was pretty weak. Watching him perform is like watching a little kid pretend top be an adult. He is so outclassed by the top performers.

Blake failed to impress this time. he was just OK. And he seemed a little surprised to not get praise this time, which makes he wonder if he isn’t the one Sundance was talking about here.

Stephanie Edwards would have shined if she went more disco in her cover of a Ross disco hit. Instead she made it repetitive.

Chris Sligh and Phil Stacy were the best male singers of the night.

Melanie is still tops. She is just amazing. Lakisha did a great job with God Bless the Child. Probably one of the best covers I’ve heard of that classic.  But I still think she ranked second, slightly because Melinda took a lame song from The Wiz (which is really bad) and made it good. That is talent! Jordin Sparks surprised everyone by covering a song few people even know and making it really entertaining to listen to. These three women are the ones to beat.

My guess is, a guy goes.

UPDATE:
Yep. Brandon went. I was going to suggest him, anyway. he was one of my early picks, plus he screwed up. Kind of a surprise to see Sanjaya there. Maybe we won’t have to deal with him much longer. One can hope. He makes me yearn for the golden days of Kevin Covais.

  1. Blake is the best of the guys, but he’s not even half as good as Melinda and Kiki (I just love it that Diana Ross called her that!).

I followed your Sundance link and voted.  Over half think Blake is the one he wouldn’t name.

Do y’all ever check out televisionwithoutpity?  Their recaps are hilarious!

Oh PLEASE let Sanjaya go home tonight.

  3. We are stuck with Sanjaya.  I hope he goes next week or he’ll be on the tour.  That probably won’t make a huge difference for me, because I’m fastforwarding and not voting this year anyway.  If I bought a ticket for the tour acts can’t be fastforwarded through.

  4. I don’t know how any of the guys can be claiming victory at this stage of the game when there are at least 3 of the women who are better singers and performers.  Of the guys, Chris Sligh has by far the best voice, but he is not the greatest performer and does not always pick the best songs.  Blake is a close 2nd on voice but is a better performer.  I was surprised that Phil was in the bottom 3, I didn’t think he should be there.  The next four weeks *should* see Sanjay, Chris R, Gina & Haley go, hopefully in that order, if all the others continue to perform well.  But of course we know not everybody votes on best vocals so that makes it interesting.

  5. I’m not voting either. Last year I even threw some votes to the others in addition to Taylor because I liked them. This year, I think Melinda will get it. Lakisha will come in second or third.

I agree, Laurie, that the top women have the guys totally beat this year. Blake is a good singer, but he is going to have to do more than tricks to shine.

  6. I just hoping Phil makes it to the top 10.  Also Halie.

Sanjaya is trying to look and sound like michael jackson when he sings really soft.

His voice isn’t bad, there’s just nothing behind it.  No power, no charisma, just a decent voice.

I thought Phil was growing his hair back and that was why he was wearing the hats.  His head is not suited for the bald look.

  7. Yep, I’m not voting this year either.  I voted my little heart out for Taylor last year and I’m not going to get so emotionally involved this year.

It seems to me like the guys did well during the auditions, but have gone downhill ever since.

I can’t even come up with the 10 that should go on the tour.  Six or 7, maybe.
