American Idol: 3/3
What a wonderful night. The theme for the week is Swing and the coach is Tony Bennett, who looks incredible at age 80. Bennett seemed to be very inspiring because everyone did a good to great job.
As you may or may not know, swing is some of my favorite music. So last night was a real treat for me.
The usual suspects once again did a flawless performance. Melinda, Blake, Jordin and Chris all impressed the judges and the audience. Phil and Sanjaya less so, but I think they both did well. Especially Phil. Sanjaya is getting better, but I would love to see him go. But it won’t be this week, I think.
Gina was really good but for some reason Simon wasn’t impressed. Lakisha did really well, but I’m beginning to see her performances as all the same. She can definitely sing, but she doesn’t have the same spark and versatility of either Melinda or Jordin.
The weakest link this time was probably Haley who I thought did OK, but the judges were dismissive. I think she’s gone tonight and from her reaction, I think she know it too.
She’s talented, but nothing we haven’t seen before. With this many good singers it comes down to style and personality. Sanjaya may lacking in the singing department, but he seems to appeal to a lot of teens. We all know how much taste teens have, so he’ll probably make it to the top four or five. I hope not, but teens usually have at least one in the race up t the top five.
All in all, it was a great night.
UPDATE: Gina, not Haley. Well, I was a bit surprised, but Smile is kind of a sad song and haley’s was more upbeat. Negative or downer songs are to be avoided at all costs on this show. Hopefully, Sanjaya will sing something depressing next week.
Regarding Phil, have you noticed the judges always deride him when the guest coach praises him?
Peter Noone said Phil sang “Tobacco Road” better than anyone he had ever heard sing that song. Simon especially hated it. Then Noone said “this is not a singing competition, it is a voting competition”. Ummmmm, could there be a problem between Peter and Simon?
Then last night Tony Bennet said Phil was one of the best voices he had heard anywhere (or something like that, I deleted the show before I thought to remember exactly what he said). Then Simon doesn’t like him. What gives? I think they want Melinda or Blake and want no one to challenge their winner. Simon hated that Taylor won last year because he had picked Katherine or Elliot or Daughtry to win, but not Taylor. He does not want a repeat.
I’m tired of Blake, Lakisha, and listening to Sanjaya (although he is entertaining). I thought Gina did a great job. I loved Chris. Melinda can not dance and should not try to move on stage. Most background singers are better than the ‘star’, but there is a reason they are backup singers. Melinda has a wonderful voice but zilch in command of the stage.
At this point I don’t want any of them to win. None have grabbed me to the point of wanting them to be the next AI.
Posted by on 04/04 at 07:03 AMI think Phil gets better every week. Kind of like Elliott did last year. (BTW Elliott’s CD is great). But it’s weird that even Randy and Paula are not giving him his due. Is that because he’s in the Navy and would not be able to do a lot of things and Idol would need to do if he won? That may be why.
I know what you mean. I don’t have a lot invested in anyone here. I kind of like Jordin and Melinda at this point to win. Chris has also improved a lot.

LOL!
Re: Gina vs. Haley I really think they are about on the same par as far as singing talent, I just liked Gina’s style better. Haley is only still there because every episode her skirts get shorter.
I think they all sounded better this week than in a lot of previous weeks, simply because the song style this week was more conducive showing off their real vocal ability. Except Sanjaya, his voice seemed even more lackluster to me than usual while he was overly focused on the performance. I still like Phil over Blake or Chris. And I’m with you on Melinda and Jordin.
