American Idol: 4/10/2007

Just last week I was thinking: “You know, they never did a Latin Week on American Idol. They should do that as a change of pace.” And guess what happened on my birthday? Jennifer Lopez was the coach of the week (to help her poor CD sales, no doubt) and the theme was Latin music.

Of course, American Idol’s idea of Latin music (or the contestants, anyway) is Miami Sound Machine or Santana from his previous CD. Well, ok, Melinda and Sanjaya (ugh) dusted off some classic from the lounge era (Sway and Besame Mucho respectively).

It wasn’t as spicy a show as you would think. Lopez was a pretty laid back coach, kind of like Gwen Stefani. And The performances were mostly OK. In fact, this is the first week Simon dissed Melinda (and she handled it extremely well). And surprisingly enough, the guys outshone the women this week. Blake came in at #1 and Chris at #2. Phil Stacy did well, but not anything amazing. he san a Marc Anthony song, who is currently Jennifer Lopez husband (but not for long, apparently). Sanjaya actually did a decent job for once. But I would still vote him off in a heartbeat.

The women mostly seemed out of their element and were tentative. They didn’t exhibit any of that Latin fire. Melinda moved very awkwardly in her high heels (which I think is because she is not used to them, and lacks confidence in her looks). Lakisha was the same old, same old. She has this vacant look when she sings. Her first performance was apparently the exception, not the rule. Jordin did ok, but seemed out of her element a bit. Haley was doing her best to stay in the game, so she wore some shorts up to her eyeballs. It was yet another dinner theater singing act. Not bad, but it’ll probably win her work on a cruise line.

Surprisingly enough, Dial Idol puts Lakisha and Jordin at the greatest risk of being voted off this week. Haley isn’t even close to the bottom. Well, she does have some amazing legs.

Hopefully, Jordin will survive another week. As great a singer as Lakisha is, I don’t think she had a chance of winning this. But I expected her to make the top 4 or 5 at least. Looks like she won’t. We’ll see.

UPDATE: Haley Scarnato is the loser. Lakisha wasn’t even in the bottom 3. Dial Idol hasn’t been as accurate this year it was last year.

Next is country week with Martina McBride as guest coach. Since there are no country singers this year, this will be interesting.

  1. I liked Blake this week.  I still like Phil better than Chris. Yes, Chris does a good job bringing things contemporary, but there is still this strange whiney sound in his voice, not all the time but it is there, and it is very annoying.  I could not listen to a whole album of Chris, I think I would be jumping out a window after 3 songs.

I thought Jordin did really well.  Lakisha did go out of her comfort zone on the moving she did, but that was nowhere near a difficult song, it was like the same 5 notes over and over again. She should have picked a song that was more difficult vocally and skipped the attempt at dancing.  Melinda’s song was a bit old fashioned but it had a high difficulty level that I didn’t think she got the credit she deserved for singing.  I was wondering how Haley was going to get into anything shorter this week than last week’s skirt and I see she managed it.

I thought Lopez brought more to the coaching than Gwen Stefani did.  You can tell she is a more experienced artist.

  2. I like Phil better than Chris, also. But he does look a bit like Gollum sometimes with thoe big eyes. Chris has these goofy moves and as you say his voice is kind of keening and whiney. I like his one performance where he stepped out of that, but it got him in the bottom 2 so he proably won’t try that again.

Melinda’s comeback to Simon was inspired.

  3. It seems once again, the ‘vocal coach’ loves Phil’s voice but the judges dislike him.  I wish he had been able to choose a different song.  I was told that they are given a ‘choice’ of 2 songs.

I actually liked Chris last night, but couldn’t stomach Blake.  He has a weird mouth that to me is distracting.  I just can’t watch him sing.  I take my glasses off whenever he performs.

I never understood why Lopez was with Anthony.  He is such a ‘little’ man.  Guess she wanted someone to protect her but he quickly let his Napoleon complex get the better of him.

  4. I know what you mean about Blake’s mouth. It’s like he’s just eaten something sour and distasteful when he sings.

I think this is husband 3 for JLo (Affleck would have been #3 but they split before the wedding).

  5. It is weird, they keep saying “this is a singing competition” but it is also about the whole package, the presentation, who is marketable.  Maybe they don’t think Phil has that whole package even if he sings better. I don’t think Simon had that much nice to say about Taylor last year until like the final two weeks.  Just about every week he told him he was like the drunk father at a wedding.

  6. Simon is kind of like Chef Emeril on the Food Network. He only has a handful of catch phrases.

He picks his favorites then builds them up and tears down the others. The problem with Phil is he is active duty military, which means if he won, he would not be able to do a lot unless he got a discharge or the navy gave him more leave. Being an Idol is a full time job. As it is, there is the summer tour.

  7. Have you seen Bob Dylan singing the song he wrote for Sanjaya…it involves rabbits. Whoa!
