American Idol 5/1
If you ask me, Blake owned tonight with his beat box rendition of “You Give Love a Bad Name”. It was really great and serves to remind people why Blake is so special on this season. He’s been kind of dull the last few weeks, but he blew them away tonight. Melinda was arguably the second best. It’s a close call. The fact is, no one was bad tonight. Phil continues to shine. Not just his head.
So it’s a hard call who will go tomorrow night. I have a feeling it will be Chris and Lakisha. They just aren’t as popular as the others. Jordin kind of messed up tonight (for her, anyway) but she was still good and I think people like her too much now. Phil has a decent fan base that may be growing. He is this season’s Elliot Yamin. And Dial Idol predictions hold up my guess that Lakisha and Chris are vulnerable. They both did good tonight, but it will be down to their popularity vs the others.
Bon Jovi week provided some good material. Even though it took people out of their comfort zone, they all did well. It’s hard to believe there are only three more episodes to the finale.
Vote for the Worst has Phil front & center of their home page...I checked...hmmmmmmmm.
Posted by on 05/02 at 04:46 AMBlake was fantastic! The best of the night, I think. I got the impression that Bon Jovi didn’t want his song messed with too much.
Where was Ritchie?
I also think Chris will be one that leaves tonight. I’ve never cared much for him, anyway, so I won’t be heart-broken. My guess is that Lakisha or Phil will be the other.
Wish Gina could have performed last night.
We’ll be down to four after tonight. That’s when it really starts to hurt.
Posted by on 05/02 at 04:57 AMI, too, enjoyed Blake. Except looking at that goofy hairdo. Who is that creepy comedian with the same hairstyle? Maybe this was his homage to Sanjaya.
Must champion Phil. Again, the ‘mentor’ praised him highly. Bon Jovi said he got chills. For some reason Simon does not like Phil. Did not like Chris AT ALL. He must go. LaKisha did a very good job, but don’t think it was enough to save her. Melinda’s singing was very good. She must have watched a lot of old Tina Turner videos, because she did a great imitation of Tina’s stance. But didn’t come close to the dancing moves.
Posted by on 05/02 at 07:17 AMMelinda don’t move well, but she can sing. I think Phil has gotten better each week. He was really good this week.
Blake looked more like Simon LeBon to me last night.
Posted by James Hudnall on 05/02 at 07:30 AMI like Phil a lot lately - he seems to be getting comfortable with being on stage, and his song selection is improving. I suspect Simon, and the producers around him, are trying to discourage people from voting for Phil because if he won, he’d be another Taylor Hicks - talented and popular with the phone voters, but such a niche performer that once his album is released into the wild it’ll disappear off the radar screen almost instantly. In short, unprofitable. If there’s one thing Simon Cowell knows, it’s how to make money with music (the guy pulls in more money for Sony than Bruce Springstreen, according to 60 Minutes).
Re: LaKisha - I was a big fan of hers in the beginning, but until last night she was really coming across as a diva. Last night’s performance was one of her better ones in recent memory. Still, if I had to choose between her and Jordin and Melinda, no contest it would be Melinda with Jordin a close second. Jordin doesn’t have the polish that Melinda does (or the vocal range), but she’s damn good nonetheless and has a positiviely infectious personality.
Re: Blake - I like the guy a lot. There’s something bizarrely hypnotic about the way he sings. The beatboxing is mildly amusing, and thankfully he’s kept it in the extreme background for most of the competition. Still, he doesn’t hold a candle next to three women.
Re: Chris - Meh. Emminently forgettable. He’s got the JT teeny bopper vote sewed up, that’s for sure.
Posted by on 05/02 at 07:56 AMIt’s a shame Taylor flamed out. I hope he coms back stronger with another CD. His first CD was good, but non of the songs were catchy enough.
The problem with Phil is he’s an active duty sailor. I don’t know how he could have a career until he leaves the service. The military might let him go on tour and all that, but he still has responsibilities to his job. He can’t just up and leave. Unless the navy gives him a discharge.
To me, the final three should be Melinda, Jordin and Blake in that order.
Posted by James Hudnall on 05/02 at 08:36 AMI don’t think Taylor has flamed out at all. Slow and steady wins the race. I’ll reserve judgement for a few more years. Let’ see what his second album does. It took Bonnie Rait many, many years to get the recognition and hits from Nick of Time.
Blake - Gimmick. Maybe he should do sound effects for Pixar.
I don’t think we have seen Melinda’s best yet. Scarry thought.
Posted by on 05/02 at 09:53 AMWell, Paula Abdul’s first CD took an incredible 62 weeks to hit #1 on the Billboard 200 album sales chart, the longest an album has been on the market before hitting #1.So it could happen to Taylor. I don’t think he’s a failure. What I meant is, I am sorry to see his CD disappear from teh charts so fast. Because it’s good. And I think he has what it takes to be a success.
I think he may need a second CD to break throuh. Kelly Clarkson really took off with her second CD.
Posted by James Hudnall on 05/02 at 10:10 AMI would like to see Melinda, Jordin, Phil in top three. Phil versus Blake.... just a personal preference I guess. I prefer Phil’s tone and range, vocally he just interests me more and I like hearing him more, although Blake does a fine job. I agree, I think Chris & Lakesha are gone.
I think Taylor will keep at it and will do well.
Posted by Laurie on 05/02 at 12:34 PMPhil’s a better singer than Blake, but Blake is more original and a better performer. Thaqt’s why I think he will be in the top 3. We’ll see.
Phil has a growing fan base.
Posted by James Hudnall on 05/02 at 12:51 PMLooks like Phil gt the axe tonight
Posted by James Hudnall on 05/02 at 05:39 PMI’m now boycotting the show. There is no way Lakeisha got more votes than Phil in two weeks voting. Dialidol must be really off then because it had lakiesha and blake in the bottom 2 in both weeks.
Don’t care now who wins.
Posted by on 05/02 at 07:35 PMI think Lakisha will be gone next week.
I like Melinda, Jordin and Blake. If either of them wins I will be satisfied. Lakisha is good also, but the other three have more of a star quality.
Phil will be back in a couple weeks for the finale. And I think everyone in the top 6 or 8 will have CDs out nxt year.
Posted by James Hudnall on 05/02 at 08:25 PMWorst song of the night - definitely Robin Thicke. What the heck was THAT?
I’m glad Chris is gone, but I got kinda teary-eyed when Phil got axed. I’ll be happy if either Melinda or Blake wins.
Posted by on 05/03 at 04:46 AMLOL on Robin Thicke. About 5 measures into the “vocal” if you can call it that, I did a Simon impression… ‘That was utterly horrendous’
I am sad that Phil is gone, but I hope to see more of him in the future. I would buy a CD.
