American Idol Top 9

Last night was a very good show except for the wet blanket named Simon Cowell. The first mentor of the season was Dolly Parton, a country legend who is also a phenomenal songwriter. The Idols all did justice to her music in varying degrees. I was especially impressed with Carly Smithson’s version of “Here You Come Again”. It was excellent, but Simon pretty much shrugged at it and dissed her clothes. I didn’t know he was running for Mr Blackwell’s job, but he’s been commenting on clothes a lot lately.

The usual suspects did really well. David A, Dave Cook and Michael Johns did especially good sets. Everyone else was solid, in my opinion. It was one of the most consistently good episodes in a while.

But Simon was a holy terror last night with the exception of a few people he liked. So based on his comments, I think the following people might be. on the chopping block tonight.

Syesha Mercado, who did a great cover of “I will Always Love You”, but was trashed for not living up to Whitney Houston. Kristy Lee Cook, even though she did one of her best performances ever with “Coat of Many Colors”. And Ramiele Malubay who sang “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind” very well. I thought it was fine, but Simon kinda trashed her. If Ramiele isn’t in trouble, then it might be Jason Castro who did a very solid performance, which Simon pretty much trashed.

At this stage anyone can go except maybe David A.

By the way, Dave Cook came out and gave credit to all the bands he referenced on his earlier performances, so that’s put to rest. And apparently he had a medical emergency after his performance and was rushed to the hospital. He never gave any indication he was under such stress during the show, which makes him a good performer. And he was one of the few Simon liked last night.

  1. I wasn’t surprised to see Ramiele go.  I didn’t think her voice was powerful enough Tuesday night.  Or maybe the band just overpowered her.

I felt sorry for her, anyway.  She’s so tender-hearted.  But, she still gets to go on the tour.

I think Simon’s apologies were half-hearted, but at least he made the attempt.  How could he not, when faced with Brooke White’s wholesomeness?  Anyway, it must suck to be Simon.

I think David is going to win.  I’m just not sure if it will be David A. or David C.

  2. Yeah, this season is only surprising in who goes next. It looks like it will being either of the two Davids, though they seem to be pimping Michael Johns lately.

I think Carly was great the other night. I don’t get the criticism. I also think Brooke was better than Simon claimed.

  3. I was glad to see Brooke humbled to the bottom three...she was smiling while singing Jolene...not a smiley song..showed major disconnect from the song and is a big pet peeve of mine. I also agreed with Simon about Carly’s outfit...did not match the music she was singing and was a bit distracting and very unflattering. Pirates of Penzance/dominatrix meet Dolly? She has a wonderful voice and had she been singing a rock tune it wouldn’t have seemed as out of place.
    Michael Johns...wow...finally. I’d buy that.
David Cook was great.I’d spend money on him. David A...great voice, but I’d never buy anything from him.

  4. David A is kind of like a male Celine Dion. He’s a bit too showbizy.

I like Brooke, but she and Carly both seem to need more coaching.

  5. My problem with David A. is quite simply his age. Maybe after he has experienced love, lust, and loss it will add some emotional depth to his music. I can’t really connect to him at this point.
I totally get the Celine comparison...she sings perfectly, but with little depth of emotion (IMO). Maybe it’s because they were emotionally stunted at such a young age by being so focused on only one facet of their lives.
I could also compare them to Nancy Kerrigan, beauty and technical perfection, but little Oksana beat her with passion...I go for the passion every time.
That’s why I loved Taylor so much...he won with his passion.

  6. You’re absolutely right, Nancy.
