American Idol Top Six

Andrew Lloyd Webber was the coach this week and his music was what they all had to sing. It pretty much separated the wheat from the chaff.

As much as I like Brooke, I think she and Jason are in the bottom 2. And Brooke is the likely loser this week. She did something I’ve never seen anyone do on Idol. She stopped and restarted. When she restarted, I think she did a impassioned performance but it was still flawed. The song was “You must Love Me” from the movie version of Evita. Kind of a downer of a song. Bad to do songs like that on Idol. It tends to lose votes.

Jason made the mistake of taking on Memories. A song best known as a Barbra Streisand standard. He actually made me listen closely, but he cracked up in places. His fans may save him this week, but he’s one of the weaker links at this stage. I think he’s an original folk artist, but on a show like this, it’s only going to get tougher for him.

Everyone else did good to great, Syesha started off the show with a stunning performance of “One Rock & Roll Too Many” from Starlight Express. It was like watching the show without those lame costumes.

Carly Smithson totally rocked “Jesus Christ Superstar”. She seemed to be having a ball up there.

David Cook did a very powerful rendition of “Music of the Night”

David Archuleta did a decent version of “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera. I agree with Simon that it wasn’t huis best. It was kind of by the numbers for him. But good.

I think Brooke is out this week, unless Jason has less fans. Oh well. No more room for slip ups. She’s had a couple bad weeks in a row. I don’t think she’ll have another.

UPDATE: I can’t believe Carly lost this week. Her performance was great. I actually download the studio song from iTunes. JCS is a favorite of mine anyway. It’s a rocking tune. Did you now the guy who sang the hit radio version of that in the early 70s had a hit in the early 80s called “One Night in Bangkok”? His name is Murray Head. Anyway, I’ll miss Carly. Maybe she’ll be seen at the Field again, but I hope she gets some recording deals.

  1. I really don’t get the Broadway connection with Idol personally since these people will all be Top-40 pop singers, but they have to do what they have to do. Brooke should go, and I wouldn’t be upset, but I would be happy to see “Dreads” go as the guy just annoys me. My buddies and I chat on this and more on my site after every performance episode at http://mysocialstandards.blogspot.com/ - it’s worth the read.

  2. That was the second time Brooke has stopped and started over.
Jason Castro and Brooke were definietly the two weakest of the night. It doesn’t really matter to me at this point which one goes first. Jason seems buzzed all the time and Brooke’s “humble” personality is wearing a little thin these days. Maybe I’m too cynical or just plain pissy to buy into it.haha
Sayesha (as much as she annoys me) seems to be stepping up her game every week.
Carly finally let it loose. Let’s hope she can keep up that level of energy. Yeah for her.
David Cook just continues to amaze me. I hope he can win over the little hobbit David.
How many times have the David’s been given the pimp spot? I don’t think Sayesha has been there yet. I can’t remember anyone but the David’s and maybe Carly out of the folks that are left. I guess Simon is right...their performances were easily forgotten.

  3. Jason is either stoned or has permanent stoner qualities, ala “The Dude” in the Big Lebowski. I do think he’s unique, but frabkly (aside from the fact I think dreds on white guys is a lame look) he just doesn’t seem to have the chops to win this competition.

David A is to precious and anointed to deserve a win. Every time he gets up there I almost expect a beauty pageant speech. There’s something too showbiz about him for my taste. He seems like a product rather than a person.

David Cook has slowly been winning me over. I was not a fan of his at first. But I think he has made very smart choices and has done some interesting and risky things. He deserves to win more than the other David.

I like Brooke, but she’s out of her league with the others. She is better suited to some folksy pop stuff like Jewel, Carol King or Sarah Maclaughlin. Idol is more of a show boat show.

As for the broadway aspect, a bunch of ex-Idols have ended up in stage shos, so I understand.

  4. Brooke just needs to go home.  It seems like her performances get worse every week.  She’s a sweet gal, but I don’t think she has what it takes mentally to be in the music business.

I didn’t care for David Cook’s performance - he just didn’t hold my attention. On the other hand, I thought Syesha was fantastic.  She had my attention the whole time.  Fun song!

  5. Yes, Bannod, I have to give it to Sayesha. She did a good job. She has been improving every week and she looked fab in that red dress.
That wasn’t my favorite performance by David Cook, but he did a good job of it. He sounds really good on the studio cuts. His head is very odd shaped, though...hahaha

  6. I can’t believe they let Carley go this week. Brooke must have a lot of fans.

  7. When they told Brooke she was safe, I then figured Jason would be the one to go home.  What a shock to find them both safe.  I guess I’m glad Syesha stays another week.  I loved her sassy song.  But I sure will miss Carly.

  8. I’ll miss Carly, too. I guess it is a matter of fans at this point. I really thought she’d make it to the top three.

  9. I’m glad Carly is gone.  I thought her rendition of “Jesus Christ, Superstar” was awful.  She shouted the whole song and her strut, squat, style performance is annoying.  She HAD a record deal, and nobody bought her CD (well 400 people did).

This season is the WORST season ever.  I do like Brooke’s folksy sound (all the negativity on the blogs as gotten to her) and Jason’s Jack Johnson approach.  David Cook sounds pretty good and since someone got a hold of him and changed his style (especially the hair) he is looking better.  This season I’ve DVR’d the shows and have hit FF a lot.

  10. James,
Update your masthead.  It’s Spring! Hope you are still enjoying the Great NW.  Maybe it’s still winter there.

Where the hell is the global warming that algore promised us?

  11. I’ve been thinking about the mast head. As for Spring, it snowed last weekend here. The weather looks OK today, but the last few dasy wee cold and rainy. Sheesh.
