American Idol: Women 2/21/2007
Wow. The women really kicked ass tonight. And the black chicks ruled. The white girls were looking pretty weak by comparison except for maybe Gina Glocksen.
At the top of the list is Lakisha Jones who sang one of the key songs from Dreamgirls, “You’re Gonna Love Me”. And she sang it better than Jennifer Hudson, who’s up for the Oscar. It was so good my eyes got all watery. I’m not kidding.
The second best singer, in my opinion, was Melinda Dolittle. She reminds me of a young Gladys Night. Really nice and yet a very powerful singer. The third place is shared by Stephanie Edwards who kicked off the night with a very polished and strong performance. Sabrina Sloane really kicked out the jams. The two of them were equally great.
I think everyone else was varying degrees of good. Probably the weakest performance was hot Jersey girl Antonella Barba, who was just OK. And Alaina Alexander, who did an uninspired, waver y version of “Brass in Pocket”. Everyone else was pretty good.
The white girl who has a chance this year is Gina Glocksen, but I have a good feeling about Leslie Hunt. None the less, they have a real fight on their hands.
I thought the talent last year was really good, but overall, this year might have better singers. Especially on the female side.
UPDATE: Rudy Cardenas and Paul Kim got the axe tonight along with Amy Krebs and Nicole Tranquillo. I was not surprised by the guy choices, but Nicole going kind of surprised me. I was also not surprised to see Sundance and Sanjaya skate. Apparently, they are very popular. Sanjaya probably has the teeny bopper vote sowed up.
I agree with you 100%. I pretty much thought Simon was right when he said he was tempted to tell the other 23 to pack their bags. Lakisha’s got nothing to worry about - she’ll end up with a recording contract.
I liked Stephanie’s voice, but I didn’t like her actions up in the gallery, when she wasn’t aware that the camera was on her. She looked very sour when Sabrina, Lakisha and Melinda were singing. That would influence my vote.

Of course, it’s going to take more than one performance to win, but both of them are the ones to beat.
Did you see Simon grinning ear to ear during Lakisha’s performance? I’ve never seen him so happy.
Posted by James Hudnall on 02/22 at 09:25 AMI haven’t watched a complete episode of this entire series from the beginning, on general principles because in its first year, it replaced Greg The Bunny, which was relegated to the Fox Sunday Evening Slushpile Of Death. However, I was up today at Holy Mackerel O’Clock in the morning, and I caught some footage that was rebroadcast on Imus. WOW! I couldn’t agree more! Lakisha has a destiny and I guess we were all priveleged to see its beginnings.
Posted by Brin-Marie McLaughlin on 02/22 at 10:33 AMThe ones I liked least, in order of worst to better: Alaina, Nicole, Antonella. Although both Alaina & Nicole sang better than Antonella last night. Favorite is too hard to pick right now. I really liked all the rest of the girls. Of course, who could not love Lakisha, she is incredible. But I really loved Jordin Sparks too. And I certainly appreciated how well all the others sang too.
Posted by Laurie on 02/22 at 12:44 PMJordin was really good. I just rewatched it again since I have it on my Tivo.
I think one of the reasons the women were so good this year is they had so many to choose from. They had twice the amount as the men and had to cut down to the very best. I think it’ll be interesting to see what the men do now, to compete with that.
I also expect a lot of the women to now get all over the top. Should be amusing.
