American Idol: Women 2/28/2007

image

I wish I had the time to do a lengthy review of last night’s episode, which was excellent. But I am swamped with work at the moment. So here are my impressions.

The women continue to outshine the men this year, with a few exceptions. Last year, my favorites to win were Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee and they came in 1 and 2 respectively. This year my favorites to win are Blake Lewis and Melinda Doolittle. Of all the great singing last night, Melinda was clearly the best. She remind me of a cross between Shirley Bassey and Sarah Vaughn. Really a great performance that would have fit right into the heyday of American Pop. I was really taken by her performance of “My Funny Valentine”. I have hear that song many times by different artists, but she did her own unique version which was truly wonderful.

Second best was Lakisha Jones who did “Midnight Train to Georgia”. Great cover, but not as wowing as her performance last week. Still, really good.

imageEveryone else did decently, except Haley Scarnato, Antonella Barba and Aliana Alexander. They did better than the previous weeks, but the judges knocked them. Antonella is popular (major sex appeal) so I suspect the other two will fail to make it this week. I also predict Leslie Hunt will go, so it will be a toss up between these three. Hunt, I think is the most likely to get voted off. She sang decently, but she is just an average performer. The competition is too good this year.

I think this show will be very interesting this year because there are some real stand outs. Especially on the women’s side. Previous seasons had a lot of contestants who were easy to dismiss. But this season has a lot of potential winners. I am standing by Blake and Melinda for now. They have impressed me the most of all of them.

UPDATE: Nick, Leslie, Aliana and AJ went. Aj was the surprise, since he did a great job. I guess one should not a Nina Simone song if they want to stay, because both AJ and Leslie picked the same song and got booted. Too bad, it’s a favorite of mine.

It was fun seeing Kellie Pickler again, but did she get a boob job?

  1. I’m right there with ya, James.

I was surprised to find that Melinda has a vocal coach and a stylist. She’s not quite the amateur that I first believed.  I’m not slamming her - Taylor wasn’t an amateur, either.

It’s still an AA girl’s game - Lakisha, Melinda, Jordin, Sabrina, and Stephanie.

Did you notice that Antonella had 2 of those girls sing right before her and 2 more right after her?  Do you think there’s some manipulation there?  BTW, they sang in exact reverse order from the week before.

  2. I think they did that kind of ordering last year. Remember the PIMP SPOT? smile

    Taylor only got it once.

I think they like keeping eye candy like Antonella on the show (remember Kellie?). Plus the fans seem to like her. She won’t win but if she has a personality like Kellie did, she might end up with a record deal.

BTW: Elliot has a new song on iTunes. It’s not bad.

  3. Antonella doesnt have half the personality Kelly does.  Stuck up, over rated beotch who cant sing.  Tan version of Paris Hilton.

Leslie Hunt had the best swan song so far in idol history!

  4. Did she say at the end: I don’t even like jazz?

I think she was hoping it would work for her like it did for Blake, but he’s experienced at it.

  5. Kellie looked older tonight.  More booty, less hair.  Quite a change from last year.

I’m thunderstruck (and quite annoyed) that Sanjaya will be back next week.  I think the judges were, too.

I like how close most of the contestants are.  Sundance sure has a tender heart.

Yeah, Leslie went out with sass!

  6. Sanjaya was surprised, too. I wonder how bad he will suck next week. I think he’s a cuter version of Kevin Covais. Actually, that kid was a better singer.

Little girls with texting kept Kevin in quite late. I suspect we will be stuck with Sanjaya for awhile. I would rather look at his sister, who was smoking hot.

  7. Kellie....boob job.....duh!!!! wink
Didn’t you hear Ryan asking her what she spent her money on?...she said shoes! Nope...giant cans!! big surprise
Your right, she DOES look older....I like the AI Kellie better. She’s done pretty good tho, touring with Brad Paisley.

  8. I wondered if she’d had a boob job, but then decided it was probably due to the weight gain.  But yeah, Ryan’s comment makes sense now.  LOL

  9. Kelli’s voice and appearance made me think of a very young Tammy Wynette. I think she’s going to be very popular with Nashville.

We are probably going to be stuck with Sanjaya and Antonella until the middle of the finals - which means that some very good singers are going to go home first.

  10. I think Kellie definitely has what it takes to succeed. Her CD isn’t that bad. I have listened to all the songs. Actually, she reminds me more of Tanya Tucker or Barbra Mandrell.

I guess Taylor hasn’t been on yet because he’s on tour. But he will be in the finale for sure, passing the baton.

  11. Melinda was singing backup for quite awhile.  She needed quite a bit of encouragement from the judges to believe that she could be the front person.  Gawd, I hope we can be free of Sanjaya and Antonella SOON.

  12. Tammy Wynette - that’s it!  I knew she reminded me of someone!

Oh yeah, I finally got around to downloading Elliot Yamin’s single.  Very nice!

  13. Ace Young now has a song on iTunes. Called Scattered. It sounds a little like Fall Out Boy
