American Idol: Women 3/8/2007
Once again, the women made the men look bad. Once again, Melinda Doolittle set a standard only Lakisha could touch, but fell a little short. All the rest did varying degrees of good. I was surprised, and pleased to see Gina Glockson sing one of my favorite current songs, “You only call me when You’re Sober” By Evanescence. She’s no Amy Lee, but who is? Her version was more shouting than singing. But she pulled it off. And Jordin Sparks started the night off channelling Pat Benetar well. The above mentioned singers are more than safe.
Antonella sang Corin Bailey Ray’s “Put Your Records On” and she did some soulful stuff with it. As Simon said, she just can’t compete with the sistas on the show. Except in one regard he seems to have missed out. She’s hot and seems to be popular. Because according to Dial Idol she is once again safe.
Haley Scarnato was pretty forgettable. I would say she is in danger. So who else?
Amazingly enough both Stephanie Edwards and Sabrina Sloan are at the bottom with Haley. Both of those women are powerhouses. So I think the problem with them was their song choices. Stephanie is a great singer, but her song choices were very black kind of songs that aren’t mainstream enough. Sabrina failed to dazzle the judges tonight, even though she is one of the best singers. So shockingly enough, one or both of them might be gone tomorrow. It should be Antonella and Haley, but I suspect it’ll be Haley and one of the good singers.
It also comes down to personality. Antonella can’t sing, but people seem to like her (even though a lot of women hate her). She is probably getting votes from teen-aged boys because she’s hot, and maybe teen-aged girls who want to be like her. Who knows? Teeny bopper faves usually last up to the top eight before they start getting voted off as people have to be more serious. It’s unfair to the talented singers, but that’s showbiz.
At this point I think the season is Melinda’s to lose. She is just amazing every week (and better looking and more polished than Lakisha). Once the guys and girls start to compete for votes, watch the guys get chopped down over the next few weeks. Most of them are not as good as the top women. I’ll be interested to see how Blake does against the women in a head to head competition.
UPDATE: Why Antonella is probably safe.
Wow. Sundance and Sabrina are gone. Sanjaya is still in. I suspect Antonella wasn’t really voted off, but they did not want to lose another good singer becauyse Stephanie was also low on the Dial Idol list. I suspect we haven’t heard the last of Antonella.
James,
I agree with all that you said. I really like Melinda.....she just seems like a sweetheart....who can sing!! The problem with this competition now, is that it’s becoming a poularity contest. That’s too bad. It’s allowing no talents to hang on, while the more talented, like that young man from last week (I can’t think of his name) being let go. I really like Jordan too. She’s got talent as well as a young, bright, fun personality. I’m not much on ‘girl singers’ but this year, that’s where the talent is.
Posted by on 03/08 at 04:25 AMI’m still not voting this year...yet, so I can’t complain on who is, or isn’t, being voted off each week. Ms. Doolittle is talented, humble, and professional each and every week. I think she’s getting better and more polished, also. Melinda even acknowledged her entourage (close friends who offer advice) last week...something Taylor did when he mentioned LiMBO on a regular basis. I’m all about the Melinda Doolittle and plan to support her as she makes the final push for this year’s crown, if she gets that far. I believe she will be in the top ten with no problems. That means, after last year’s showing, Melinda’s recording deal is “in the bag.” Is Simon using reverse psychology this year? He is giving as may props to Melinda as he took away from Taylor last year.
Posted by on 03/08 at 06:55 AMI think he genuinely likes Melinda, but didn’t get Taylor. He said so again recently.
Smiling, I think you mean Phil Stacy. Yeah, it’s a popularity contest. Sanjaya is so outclassed yet he stays on every week. Ditto Antonella, but I do think she is trying harder.
Posted by James Hudnall on 03/08 at 10:39 AMWho should go? Antonella and Haley. All the other women are better than those two. Haley has a nice voice and sings well, but I think the judges are right, she doesn’t have that wow factor and it isn’t particularly memorable. Antonella is less talented than Haley, she is only there because of looks/popularity. I actually liked her a lot earlier in the competition but as it drags on with better singers being cut I’m to the point where I’ve seen enough of her. It would be an injustice if Stephanie or Sabrina get cut and she does not. But that is the way it goes sometimes.
Posted by Laurie on 03/08 at 12:02 PMUgh. You could tell the judges were disgusted that Sanjaya was still in it over Sundance. Granted, Sundance hasn’t performed as well since his audition, but he deserved it more than the Whisperer.
We will see Antonella again. I predict on the cover of Maxim in a month or two.
Posted by Paul T on 03/08 at 10:21 PMProbably. Yeah.
Poor Sundance. Sabrina sure looked mad. But she deserved better. So did Jared. Sanjaya will probably be in a few more weeks< i think. The next to go will either be Haley or Stephanie (unless Stepahnie kicks out the jams like her first night).
Posted by on 03/08 at 11:08 PMSome real shockers last night!!........the judges sure didn’t try to hide their shock at Sanjaya winning over Sundance. I agree with Paul T. Gotta commend them on the announcement pairings tho....made for BIG surprises. Never woulda thunk it! Haley & Sanjaya! WOW!! Too bad.......

Antonella’s departure was long overdue. I haven’t liked her since Hollywood, when she sang with the two other gals. I really liked blonde Bailey the country singer and was rooting for her to go through. Antonella and her best friend were goof-offs and Bailey barely got a chance to practice.
Speaking of blonde country singers, Carrie sounded good last night. The Man thought she was too skinny, though. I asked him during the Victoria’s Secret commercial if he thought they were too skinny. “Nope.” LOL!
Posted by on 03/09 at 06:28 AMI dunno. I thought Carrie looked good. And yeah, she sounded great. I wonder when they’ll have Taylor back. The finale?
