The glee they express over this situation is disgusting—the cackle of a villain whose plans have finally come to fruition (and it IS pretty much entirely their doing). The government makes a fortune on taxes (as with tobacco) but sort of “neglects” to mention <i>their rake-off has climbed just as fast as oil prices. (Liberals just love this sort of invisible tax which can be blamed on others.) They then blame the oil companies for the prices and demand a windfall profits tax—even the concept of which is an utterly obscene idea—all the while openly blocking the ability of the companies to drill—the ONLY thing which would raise supply and drop prices. And it can all be blamed on Big Oil and Bush’s Oil Buddies. Notice there’s not a word out of the Dems against Venezuela, Russia, etc? No, it’s all eeeevil USA Big Oil, not the Dems socialist buddies. It’s sickening.
It may backfire, though. Already nearly 60% of the public thinks we should drill in the US. That’s not enough to sway Washington, of course, but if prices go up another buck or two a gallon I think Mr and Mrs America will be willing to drill straight through the head of a caribou to get oil.
(And if Democrats like the windfall profits tax so much, maybe the government should have paid one during the dot.com boom when taxes revenues gushed into Washington.)Posted by on 06/14 at 06:29 PMArgh, screwed up the HTML.
