Another Triumph for Socialism

This is what happens when Socialists have too much power, as evidenced by the disaster that is Zimbabwe.

Twelve-year-old Beatrice returns from the fields with small animals she’s caught for dinner.

Her mother, Elizabeth, prepares the meat and cooks it on a grill made of three stones supporting a wood fire. It’s just enough food, she says, to feed her starving family of six.

Tonight, they dine on rats.

“Look what we’ve been reduced to eating?” she said. “How can my children eat rats in a country that used to export food? This is a tragedy.” (Watch as Beatrice digs for rodents in the fields of Zimbabwe)

This is a story about how Zimbabwe, once dubbed southern Africa’s bread basket, has in six short years become a basket case. It is about a country that once exported surplus food now apparently falling apart, with many residents scrounging for rodents to survive.

Robert Mugabe is another Castro/Kim Jong Il. Fortunately, like Castro he’s an old man not long for this world. But what of the people starving until that day?

  1. I think that the example has been made to the newly empowered thugs that surround Mugabel that when he dies (or is overthrown) the thuggery will continue as it is easier to wield power by holding a gun than by farming a plot.

I think that when Mugabe dies, a brief session of inerthug warfare will ensue followed (sadly) by more starvation.

  2. You’re probably right. Ditto with Cuba, but we’ll see.

  3. I think that what Mugabe did was mobilize the base of poor males and offered them a step away from poverty by backing his “government”.  Having tasted power thru a gun, I think that they will be reluctant to return to system based on achievement.

The problem in all of this, is that to do something as elemental as feeding the citizens requires someone to actually do the work.  Economically speaking, when the knowledge workers left the country, the only ones left to manage are the uneducated workers, but they are now too busy holding guns and wielding power to actually work and the farms fail.  When the society rewards someone for actual contributions made; the society grows.  When the rewards are taken at the point of a gun, everyone loses.

  4. Actually, he “invited” the whites back to the farms he confiscated from them, and allows them to lease the land in order to grow crops. But I’m sure a lot of whites wisely fled that country.
