Chris Sligh

Sure, he made the famous quip that he wanted to make David Hasselhoff cry, but Greenville’s own Chris Sligh says he never really wanted to win “American Idol”—and, in fact, even considered quitting two weeks before television viewers sent him packing.

“I never came into this wanting to win it,” Sligh said Thursday in a telephone interview, a day after being voted off and finishing tenth in the wildly popular singing competition. “I made the Top Ten. That was my goal.”

Two weeks ago, after scathing criticism for his re-arrangement of Diana Ross’ classic ballad “Endless Love,” the 28-year-old Bob Jones and North Greenville universities alum began to question whether his roots in indie, alternative pop-rock fit with the blueprint of “American Idol.”

“When I was pretty much universally trashed for my arrangement of ‘Endless Love,’ I kind of thought, ‘You know? This isn’t really the competition for me,’” Sligh said. “Actually, I almost dropped out that week.”

I liked Chris, except he stopped being funny, which was one of his strengths. He has a great voice. I never expected him to win, either, though.

I didn’t know, until his exit interview on idol extra that he was a hardcore X-ian. But that’s OK, he isn’t one of those boring scolds who always get trotted out as an example of Christians. The Jesus Camp types. Though he did say his parents wouldn’t let him listen to any pop music growing up. he heard his first CD when he was 18. And it was No Doubt.

  1. Probably giving a ‘shout out’ to Dave on VFTW hurt Sligh.  You could tell that pissed the ‘judges’ off and dissin’ him was their revenge.

I read where simon really disliked Taylor and was very pleased when Daughtry outsold him.

  2. James, I’d say Sligh represents the vast majority of Christians today. “Hard-core” Christian is not necessarily in-your-face scolding or preaching (although there is times and places for that). Most of it is just living your life as an example, trying to be as much like Christ as possible.

  3. Unless it’s an April fool’s joke, tomorrow will be the last day of publication at graycharles.com.

If you head over there, be sure to listen to Amy Winehouse’s version of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”.  Incredible.

  4. Sheesh. Not again. Well, he did say it was tiring to put on the site. But I post more than he does. Then again, I don’t have the comments and the traffic.

It sure is disappointing that Taylor didn’t do better than Daughtry. I think the problem is his CD doesn’t have enough dancable tracks.

He came across like a wild and crazy guy who loved to dance. But his CD has him looking all serious on the cover. And while I like the CD alot, I don’t listen to it that much.

    Not enough fun, upbeat songs.

I ordered Bucky and Elliot’s CDs from Amazon. I like the tracks I have listened to online.

Paris has a new CD, but it sounds like crap. It’s all studio crap and doesn’t show off her great voice. Plus she is unrecognizable on the cover.

  5. Daughtry just happens to fall into a hot genre right now. If Hicks gets more studio time for the second recording he should do fine but he’ll always be, IMO, a live performer. There was the same problem with Janis J. - her energy and passion never transferred well to a recording.

And I believe it took Bonnie Rait decades to get the acclaim with Nick of Time. I’m sure Taylor would be quite content to have the career Rait does.

We’ll see where all of this is in 2 or 3 years.

  6. Didn’t Taylor make the comment about a year ago that he’d be happy to be on a tour bus and eating lettuce or salads or something like that?

I get the feeling he’d rather tour than cut an album.

  7. Bob, I agree. I think he will learn from the first CD and improve in the second. Like Kelly Clarkson did. And hopefully, Bo Bice.

Taylor needs catchier tunes next time.

Daughtry has a couple of decent songs n his. And Idol did him a HUGE favor by picking I’m Going Home as the losers song. Whenever they do that, the song becomes a huge hit. It happened for bad day last year andthis year it has put that song at #1
