Computer Problems
My motherboard failed on me. It had been acting up in the last week. So I need to get a new one, but it’s a model from three years ago and no longer for sale new. I was planning on building a new computer soon, but of course, it couldn’t wait.
‘Oh, well. At least I have my laptop as backup. I put some bids in at ebay for a used motherboard of the kind I need. But I have to wait a few days in the meantime.
Anyway, nothing got done yesterday and today will be me catching up, so sorry for the light posting.
Heh.
Motherboard crashing?
I definitely know what THAT’S like.
I could have saved the housing and other things from my last computer, but it was time anyway to upgrade to a new machine so I got a used G4 Mac to save as much relevant hardware as possible from the old one. That also got me into Mac OS X. Sure, not all my old software runs in Classic Mode, but most of it does. Apple, like any other company, is gradually shepherding away support for Classic so we’ll ALL have to upgrade to OS X exclusively sooner or later.
(My last machine was pre-USB, pre-Firewire… Not a heck of a lot of options nowadays if you don’t have AT LEAST USB and Firewire on your machine!)
I’m still looking at getting a new system and software in 3 years, though.
People are kidding themselves if they think they can keepp the same old computer forever.

Posted by James Hudnall on 03/23 at 11:21 AMGeorge-- Which version of OX are you running? I was advised my my friend at Apple that you can run system 9.2.2 inside most versions of OX (up through Tiger, I think), and operate your classic programs from system 9.2.2.

I use the latest version of Tiger (OS X 10.4.9)…
OS 9.2.2 works fine within Classic Mode for the MOST PART, BUT…
A) past pre-OS X/demo versions of the iLife programs don’t work (iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, etc.); and
B) printer, mouse, tablet, and scanner drivers that are pre-OS X won’t work in Tiger. It’s really small list of things that don’t work in OS X 10.4.9… Like any company, Apple wants you to upgrade to the “latest and greatest.” As long as you can find Tiger-compatible drivers for your hardware, it’s fine. You can save files from the pre-OS X software to compatible formats you can work with in OS X for printing out, or scan in from hardware utilities to work in older pre-OS X software like Photoshop 5.5—which I do ALL the time. It takes some working around, yes, but I haven’t found it difficult to deal with.
My biggest complaint is the fact that I can’t use the OS 9 driver for my USB Wacom table in Classic mode. The tablet still works in Classic, but it tracks slowly. It’s much faster for me in the OS X-compatible software like Photoshop Elements 2. I’ve been debating upgrading Photoshop to CS2 (that’ll be more compatible for me than the upcoming CS3 and less of a hassle to deal with) but so far have held back.
No question OS X is far superior for web-surfing… Safari beats the pants off of Explorer or Netscape as a web-brower and it’s great that OS X has built-in Firewall protection. I was also able to find an OS X-compatible virus scanner from Pure-Mac.com, too!
