Crazy Dubai

image

This site has lots of pictures of some of the developments going on in Dubai, which include the world’s tallest buildings, the world’s largest amusement park, the first underwater hotel, hundreds of man-made private islands, the world’s largest waterfront development.

Personally, I think it’s good to see an Islamic country channel its energies and money into something constructive, instead of destructive. I wish more of them would follow suit.

  1. Yeah, they only get like 6% of their income from oil, so they had to try to be the ME Singapore.  Good move.
I was actually a supporter of the Dubai ports deal.  It wasn’t the risk it was painted to be and besides, as long as we’re freely hiring Muslims to work as airport support personnel, why make a fuss about a Dubai company taking care of some ports, especially since the security would have been explicitly controlled by Americans?  Dubai is clearly going to be different that the rest of the ME and it would have done a world of good for us (and them) to enter into a “exchange of equals” deal with an ME country.

  2. They’re assuming people will want to visit Dubai.  Even after looking at all the photos and plans, I see no reason to go.

  3. A lot of rich people are attracted to it. And people in that region will probably want to see it.

The Hotel Burj Al-Arab looks very interesting, but I’m with Bannod I don’t see a reason to go.  Out on the water like that appears very dangerous...weather, quakes, wars, etc.  I wonder what insurance on projects like this costs?  I’m ever the cautious one.  LOL

  5. It’ll probably be an attraction for Europeans and Asians, who aren’t that far away. They’re building all this stuff because they think their oil will run out and they need some way to bring money to the region when that happens.

If you ask me, other Arabs should get a clue. This, at least is a positive step.

  6. The place is already a hugely popular destination.  My brother-in-law was working in Yemen and went through Dubai on the way.  They laid over there and he said the place was booming, shops and malls were packed, mostly Asians and Arabs but lots of Euros as well.
They’re also starting their own gold exchange to compete with the others which should be a good move for them.
