Creeps of the Day

A group in Sweden has flattened the tires of 1000 SUVs to “fight global warming”.

Everyone knows it: action on climate change is a matter of utter urgency. Nonetheless, carbon emissions continue to accelerate, powered by the uncontrollable machines of the world economy. One eminent sign of this rush to disaster is the trend of SUVs, clogging the streets in our Western cities, emitting up to three times more carbon than cars of average size on the market. SUVs have become a symbol of the irrational destruction of the most basic conditions of life. Attached to no human need whatsoever - only to the conspicuous consumption of an affluent class, feeling the ”need” to flaunt monster vehicles - they constitute perhaps the most insane source of unnecessary carbon emissions. Everyone should know it: if we can’t deal with SUVs swiftly, we can’t deal with any other emissions either. And nothing less than our survival is at stake.

Armed with this analysis, and with mung beans or grains of gravel, a group called The Indians of the Concrete Jungle has struck against hundreds of SUVs in Sweden in recent months. The first action occured in the poshest part of innercity Stockholm in June. Tyres on 60 SUVs in Östermalm were deflated. A weblog was posted on the internet, and since then, the campaign for disarmament of SUVs in Sweden has spread like wildfire. To this date, approximately 1000 SUVs have been temporarily disarmed in at least nine Swedish cities, including the three largest (Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö) as well as several smaller cities; new tribes are popping up by the week. The Indians of the Concrete Jungle have appeared in virtually every major media outlet in the country - from a prime time debate on national television, to a very sympathetic report in the company of Indians in action published in the biggest morning newspaper, to an op-ed piece in the biggest evening paper and countless news reports in local media. Thus, in a matter of months, the issue of unnecessary carbon emissions in general and SUVs in particular have risen to the top of the agenda in Sweden – something that never happened before – and ownership of the vehicle has become all the less convenient.

How far are these self righteous ignorants going take things before they get shut down? This is what happens when politicians create a hysterical “crisis”. Groups start appearing to commit acts of terror and vandalism. In the early 70s there was all these radical terrorists like the SLA. Now we have groups like ALF and these jokers.

Notice how the website I linked to encourages people to start their own chapter. That’s the mentality we’re dealing with.

  1. One of the things that annoys me the most is how these idiots don’t base their attacks on which vehicle is most polluting, but just if they are SUVs or not.
    What a bunch of retards.
I hope some SUV owner will drag one of these scum into and alley and beat him to a pulp, but since it’s Sweden, it’ll probably never happen.

  2. These people are nothing more than cowards. If they had the courage of their convictions they would not hide under the cover of darkness.

  3. Of course what these self righteous pricks don’t get is their favorite nanny state rules require all children in car safety seats, oops can’t fit 3 or more of those in the back of a Pious, err Prius. Sooo, those “affluent” folks are forced by stupid government regs to buy large vehicles with room for all the state mandated safety gear. And in our risk averse society the large SUV is much safer for the occupants in a crash. I would love to see one of these asses being dragged on a environmentally sensitive hemp rope behind an SUV as the miscreant is delivered to a police station for arrest.

  4. There was a group of similar vandals here in the US a few years ago (California, I think?). They were slapping hard-to-remove bumper stickers all over SUVs saying “I’m destroying the planet- ask me how!”. They even had a website which I can’t remember, but there were some lively discussions from people who promised to do bad things to them if they were ever caught. Haven’t heard from them for a while; they must have been caught by the wrong guy.

  5. Hey Indians, quick quiz for you: Which vehicle will emit more carbon in the next 12 months: My wife’s 2007 4-cylinder Honda Civic, or the V8 Toyota Sequoia SUV I’m about to buy for myself?

WRONG!! My wife drives about 400 miles per week, consuming about 13 gallons of gas per week in her compact car. By contrast, as I work from home, and only drive about 75 miles per week, I will consume about 5 gallons of gas per week in my full-size SUV.

But the simple logic of this obviously completely escapes the GW devotees.

  6. Hey all! The writer of this article and some of these comments demonstrate your own ignorance. This represents an effective way to raise awareness of personal transportation choices influencing a global problem of perhaps epic scale.

Forget about criticisms of their technique being inaccurate, they got media around the world BECAUSE they are able to avoid the self righteous violent ones. Its a flat tire, get a grip people!
