Eat Your Bacon

Here’s another story that reverses another claim about food.

Eating nitrite/nitrate-rich foods such as vegetables and cured meats may help improve the chances of surviving a heart attack and of recovering more quickly.

That’s the finding of a preliminary study in the Nov. 12 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers found that mice fed extra nitrite and nitrate had 48 percent less cell death in the heart following a heart attack than mice fed a regular diet. Mice fed a low nitrite/nitrate diet had 59 percent greater cell death.

One week that say it’ll kill you, the next it will save your life. Sheesh!

  1. It reminds me of what I call the ‘Salami Conundrum.’

In the course of one week there were three health related stories about eating salami.

The first said that salami will instantly kill you, the second said it would make you live longer, and the third said it had no effect at all.

  2. That’s why I generally ignore and or mock these pronouncements. If you don’t over eat anything, it’s not going to affect you that much.
