End Bio Fuels Now

Using food as fuel is insane, as the global food crisis brutally demonstrated. There are plenty of not food alternatives, but really, when the price of oil is entirely driven by market speculation based on media hysteria and not on actual shortages this sort of thing is downright insane.

Global food prices have risen because food grains are in short supply. Another strong reason given for this is the shift to biofuel, which are promoted as a green alternative to conventional fuels, like petrol and diesel.

The use of food for fuel started when the energy crisis forced the world to look for alternatives. Scientists turned to biofuel for energy solutions. The biofuel are made from food grains like corn.

But using food for fuel started the debate - Does the biofuel boom mean bust for food grains?

The European Union has said that at least five per cent of oil used in automobiles must be biofuel by 2010. But that directive is now being looked at again in the wake of global food crisis.

Most of the countries in Europe are now cutting down on generous subsidies for biofuel crops.

  1. Yeah,

    This is REALLY INSANE!

I got sticker-shock last week after buying groceries.  It was ridiculous what I had to pay for so little.

The powers-that-be DON’T think food will cost more IF important food crops are being processed into fuel (which may or may not damage your car’s engine depending on model, make, and year)?  This just doesn’t make any sense at all!  Left and right, I just read about food shortages from grains to rice to about anything you can think of.  The eco-nonsense is just infuriating.

Look, I want a clean neighborhood AND a clean planet as much as anybody else, but bankrupting the average person AND starving a few million to death just doesn’t make sense.

We really are electing math-challenged and mentally-retarded people into government...!

  3. What is ridiculous is the sticker shock on all energy costs.  Food’s increase is marginal (next to nothing).  The cost you are seeing and really paying is two trends.

Trend 1 - Escalating oil prices forcing higher transportation and production costs.

Trend 2 - A declining dollar forcing inflation begining first and most profoundly in the commodity markets (being connected to the escalating oil costs to farmer, transportation, and distribution).

In 2007 more corn was grown than at any time in history.  More corn was sold into feed, made into ethanol, and exported to other nations than at any other time.  The US has more of all things corn including popcorn and sweet corn.

Two years ago the US was blamed for its ag policy by the UN characterizing it as dumping.  Under 18 months later its now characterized as too tight on the supply side.

The spin in the media on this subject is ridiculous and your blog post is under informed on the subject.  If it wasn’t for our ethanol policy gas would average between $.15 and $.40 more a gallon and our trade balance/inflating dollar would even be worse than it is now.
