End of the Sopranos?

Not since Twin Peaks ended with Agent Cooper laughing at the mirror or the cigarette smoking man getting killed in a ridiculous manner on X-Files, has a TV show concluded with such a pointless denouement. The ending of the Sopranos was like the season close of previous seasons. A non event. If that’s a kind of statement from series creator David Chase, the statement is: “Don’t watch any more David Chase shows.”

Sure, it had it’s moments. And thi season was pretty good, unlike the last season of Twin Peaks and the X-Files. But really, of all the stupid ways to end the show, just ending like life goes on, in such a cock tease fashion is almost an insult. I mean, it would be an insult if I hadn’t gotten wise to David Chase’s propensity for non-events.

In the end he created a memorable series with great characters, but like life, the Soprano is full of disappointments. Maybe that’s his point.

  1. I liked it. I see what you mean about the cock tease, but I wasn’t really looking forward to the payoff.

  2. My wife said it best: “So that was Chase’s last shot at telling the audience FU?”

About halfway through we realized it would have the typical Sopranos non-event ending.

Hey Hud, you should send him a copy of your notes on writing. Maybe he’d learn a thing or two about satisfying storytelling. Though it’s obvious Chase relishes being labeled a nihilistic artist and adored by “sophistic” critics.

  3. he’s made millions off the show, so I doubt he’s interested in my opinion. I think he could haev gave us something. It didn’t have to be Tony dying, but a feeling of a story ending instead of just being cut off in a boring scene.

  4. BRILLIANT!!!!
When it went to black.....I leaped up shouting at the TV, cursing my cable provider....how DARE they screw up my fav shows final scene!?!!?!? The dog was barking, my heart was pounding.....I started calming down once the credits started to roll. Leaving an open end....prefect! The Sopranos stay alive in my heart & mind. That’s MY ending. What a sad event if Tony, Carm or the kids had been slaughtered. The story hasn’t ended. Don’t stop believing......

  5. I say this without fear of repercussion, I’ve never seen an episode of The Sopranos.

  6. I liked it, it had the ultimate anti-climatic ending, making you think something bad was going to happen but then nothing happens and life goes on. (Don’t Stop Believin’).  I never saw Twin Peaks, but the Sopranos ending certaintly wasn’t as ridiculous as the X-Files “Seinfeld” ending.
And at least Phil got it!

  7. I thought the idea of the sketchy guys coming into the diner, and the dude heading into the bathroom was that to the observer (like Tony, regardless of whether he happens to notice these particular guys), it telegraphs a warning: could be a hit about to happen - which is something Tony has to worry about all the time. That the curtain comes down before we find out, and that there’s more at stake than just Tony (his wife and kids are there - will what happens next mirror the hit on the NY guy, killed in front of his wife and grandkids?), takes that uncertainty and stretches it out, forever. If, in fact, there wasn’t a hit about to happen, there will be one about to happen in some future moment.

Not to defend the episode, I just tuned in last night after a couple of years of not watching the show due to having pretty much had enough of Misbehaving Italians-type entertainment. Yawn.

  8. I liked it.

It actually would have been an anti-climax if Tony got killed, a cliche.  They did something completely different.

  9. I agree that killing Tony would be too expected. The show always goes in an unexpected direction. That’s part of its success. But they always end seasons like this, with non events.

    Well, OK, Phil gets whacked.

Yes, it wasn’t as bad as teh X-Files ending. That really sucked.
