Fred

I don’t normally throw in with politicians during the primaries. I may have a favorite that I sort of root for, but to be honest I rarely voted in my life. I’m usually unimpressed with my choices. However, I feel it’s important in these times to try to help the best person in the race. We need to get away from mediocre leaders.

While I can’t say anyone running for president right now excites me, none of the Democrats are acceptable. They are all too fake and they don’t seem to have any workable solutions or ideas. Of the Republicans, there are only two I would possibly vote for. That would be Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson.

After some thought, I’ve decided to support Thompson. Giuliani has an excellent record as mayor. He did what many people thought impossible, clean up New York city. The problem is, he is a bit of a nanny stater. And I can’t abide that. I think he would probably be a good leader and a strong force against the enemies we have. But I am increasingly concerned that stupid bureaucrats, empowered by the sweeping laws Bush gave them, will get out of hand. I would rather see a leader who might limit or curtail these impulses.

Thompson seems, from what I can tell, to be closer to a small government type that Giuliani. And like Rudy, he is glib and smart. I think he would make a fine leader. He was a good senator.

So I’ve decided to put up a fund raising sticker on my blog. He’s gaining ground on Guiliani. I think he has what it takes to win.

Of course, many thought he was indecisive for taking so long to get in the race. I think, however, he waited for all the others to expose themselves to the point where people got bored with them. By getting in when he did, he has lept to second place. That shows he has strategic smarts. And I generally agree with his articles. A guy who writes is also someone I can get behind.

  1. I will no longer vote for the lesser of two evils, but will back Ron Paul.

  2. Ron Paul has the right attitude about a lot of things. I just don’t see him winning any states. But I wish him luck.

Thompson at least seems fairly independant and not a party creature like Bush, who was practically rammed out the Republican’s throats in 2000.

Interestly enough, there doesn’t seem to be any of that going on this year.

  3. Duncan Hunter is my fave, but he’s not going to win.  Thompson/Hunter would be worth voting for.

  4. Ron Paul is an 18th-Century Libertarian living in a 21st-Century world. Dangerous combination.

  5. Ron Paul: Same Foreign Policy As Founding Fathers

“......by what superior wisdom have we now declared Jefferson, Washington, and Madison to be ‘unrealistic and dangerous’? Why do we insist on throwing away their most considered warnings?”

  6. I’m more libertarian than conservative. So I like Ron Paul. I do think some of his positions are too unrealistic for today’s world. And naive in other respects, which is why I don’t see him winning the nomination. There does seem to be an effort by the media to not cover him at all. Kind of like Mike Gravel.

  7. I don’t agree with all that Ron Paul espouses, but compared to the opposition, he is a bright shining star. “He never, ever changes his position.”

  8. I can understand that. There are a lot of Ron Paul signs up here in Vancouver, Wa. There’s one along the freeway near where I work.

  9. I assume Vancouver is quite liberal. One of the more interesting aspects of Ron Paul’s appeal is that his supporters cover the range from left to right. I have seen the Bonnie Blue flag at more than one of his events. As you know, I believe, I spent most of the years from ‘67 to ‘75 in Vietnam, but I am also a staunch Confederate with no apologies for my ancestor’s service in either the Revolutionary War or the WBTS, so I would be at odds with many of his liberal supporters.  You might find this video interesting, and you will see why he appeals to others like me.

  10. In as much as Rudy is pro illegal immigration and anti gun, I think you made a wise decision.

  11. Yes, there’s that as well.

  12. Vancouver is a lot more conservative than Portland...though that might only be a relative thing…
