Going Ape over Green Fuels

Every time people come up with an idea how to save the earth by using an alternative source of energy, someone will claim it is killing the planet. Wind farms are accused of killing birds. Now, bio-fuel is accused of killing apes.

The threat to great apes, such as the orang-utan, is “growing visibly” as a result of the demand for greener fuels, Richard Leakey, the paleo-anthropologist and conservationist warned yesterday.

Orang-utans: Apes under threat from green fuels, warns Leakey
Orang-utans’ habitat has been cleared by 80 per cent in 20 years

On a visit to London, the former head of the Kenya Wildlife Service said that the shift away from fossil fuels to biofuels was “a great concern” as huge areas of forest in south-east Asia had already been cleared for palm oil plantations, and the pressure could only increase.

Let’s hope that dude with the water splitter (turns water to hydrogen) has the answer, though I am sure someone will complain.

  1. Of course someone will complain.  The emission from burning hydrogen as a fuel is water vapor, a greenhouse gas 93% more potent than CO2.  This being pretty much ignored by the enviros right now since they want to keep up the illusion that CO2 is the greatest threat mankind has ever known, but once they’ve managed to pass a few CO2 laws, they will turn their gaze, like Sauron, on a new target.

  2. Farmers in Mexico are starting to grow and sell corn for bio-fuels, and the price of Mexican corn based food is going up (surprise, surprise). So, too, is the price of tequila, as one of its ingredients is now on the bio-fuel market.

BTW, corn is an inefficient source of bio-fuel; and it does not get much mileage in vehicles. But, bio-fuels make the eco-nazies feel good about themselves, so they are all in favor of it.

  3. Corn should not be used for bio-fuels. Switch grass or Sugar cane should be. For soem reasons America has it in its head we should do corn instead
