Great Books on Figure Drawing
Back in the day I used to hang out with Astro City artist Brent Anderson, who turned me on to an artist who influenced a whole generation of comic book illustrators. Andrew Loomis. His books have been passed around the Marvel Comics offices and elsewhere. Yet, many were out of print. Fortunately, you can download them as PDFs from here. There are also some other classic illustration books.
Yeah,
Loomis is a very big artist with comic book pencillers and animation artists.
There ARE two books that have excerpts of Loomis’ work in print, though—Walter Foster publishes these. They’re nice, but again you’re getting Cliffs Notes and not the full thing.
As far as the complete works go, you can download them yes, but it’s not the same as having a quality copy of the book in your hands.
Very, very disappointing for the English crowd.
Now, in GERMANY, they still have Loomis’ most famous instructional book, “Figure Drawing for All Its Worth,” in print. You can get the German edition through Bud Plant, by the way.

I like the old school art books, they are typically focused on the core basics of drawing and practice with solid technical details not the fluff that is passed off too often as art instruction books these days. Thanks for a great link.

I discovered that post this morning and downloaded all the books; I’m looking forward to applying my meager talent, hopefully helped by those excellent books.
Thanks.
