Gun Control is Bunk

The mayor of the Japanese city of Nagasaki was shot to death in a brazen attack Tuesday by an organized crime chief apparently enraged that the city refused to compensate him after his car was damaged at a public works construction site, news agencies reported.

The shooting was rare in a country where handguns are strictly banned and only four politicians are known to have been killed since World War II.

The article wants us to believe gun deaths are rare in Japan because of gun control, but it’s really because Japan is a safe place over all with one of the world’s lowest crime rates. Even so, a country with the strictest gun control lawa still have gun deaths. And here we have a criminal flaunting the law as criminals do. This is why gun control doesn’t work.

  1. One reason the crime rate is so low is because the triads there help keep it under control - it’s bad for business, so to speak. They’re a pretty pervasive influence at all stratas of society in Japan.

Same in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. I was in Taipei when one of the highest ranking gangster lords died. His name in Taiwanese was “Mosquito” and boy did he have a lot of pull. The buddhist funeral home where he was given up to the afterlife was across the park from my house. Thousands of people showed up to mourn his passing, including some of the most powerful gangster lords from Japan, the mayor of Taipei city, oh, and the president and vice president of the entire country.

One thing I learned while over there was if you ever get on the wrong side of the chinese mafia, you’re pretty much screwed. But… if you make friends with them, your life will be a lot easier.

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe airsoft/bb guns are big in Japan?  They don’t seem to have a problem with ‘violent’ toys and cartoons like we do in North America.  And yet you don’t hear about kids turning crazy and shooting up schools in Japan.

  3. Japanese films and cartoons are way more violent and sexual than ours. They also love toy guns, replica guns, etc.

  4. Hud,

The thing about anime is that I think the general audience/“children’s” series have gotten LESS violent over the past decade or so.

There were a lot more graphic deaths and nudity in anime in the 1970s and 1980s.  Sure, there IS still death and nudity in Japanese anime but it’s not appearing so much as it used to in shows that air during regular school hours (before 9:00 PM).  A lot of the stuff that has more sex and violence appears after 11 PM.

  5. I only watched Cowboys and Indians killing each other as a child, and then I would go out to play the same stories with my friends.  It didn’t affect us.

By the way,is it OK to post a link to a story on guns?

  6. Yes, if you want to add the link just put it in the body of your post. The way to make a hyperlink is put [ url=(site url) ] hyperlink text [ /url ] without any spaces.

  8. GeorgeC,

This has happened to live-action superhero shows, also.  The TV violence peaked in the 70s and at the early 80s, but then, the PTA in Japan began to take action, so there was since a decline in the quality of violence (or, specifically, martial arts action).

These shows are still quite violent, but also quite toned down compared to the days of yesteryear.
