Images that Shook the World
Lots of famous, iconic images. It’s amazing how one picture can have so much social impact. Sometimes they can give the wrong idea.
The one of the naked girl running in Vietnam is popular with anti-war people. But where did that girl end up and is living today? You guessed it. America. Gosh, why would she come to live in a Capitalist oppressors country after all that? Maybe its because Communism sucks?
The one where the Vietnamese officer shoots a man in the head, that officer ended up in the US also. He had a liquor store in Orange County until he died a few years back.
I am at a loss for words. That page had a number of “Truth and Beauty Bombs” that I am still recovering from. Talk about the best and worst aspects of humanity in one place.
In college, a photographer came to talk to us about changing the world through photos and how he had to stop because the emotional trauma of sitting there and watching was just too great. I am not sure if he was one “Bang Bang” Photogs or kept the same company but he left a real impression on us with his story and his slide show of contrasting the beauty of Africa and the compassion of humanity with the atrocities of apartheid. The guy threw my values into a tailspin for a long time.
Anyways, his buddy who committed suicide couldn’t readjust to life in the US. It took the speaker years of therapy and group counseling to readjust. He is in the company of a lot of photographers who are in the same boat as well. These pictures come at such an enormous costs. And it shows.
p.s. Those are some interesting facts regarding the to pictures.

As for the atrocities of apartheid, they were not worse than the tribalism violence which still infects that country today. Black on black violence there is incredibly vicious. Tribes mutilate their rival tribes young boys, emasculating them as some kind of pay back for an endless cycle of hate.

2.The girl was hit by napalm from VNAF fighters, not American.
3.I believe the “Union Dead” should read “Confederate Dead.’

One of the things photos like these do is give the wrong impression and the left wing media always makes it out to be our fault somehow.
Like that Kent state picture. It says the kneeling girl was shot, and that’s not true at all. She’s still alive today.
