Justice League: New Frontier trailer

JUSTICE LEAGUE: The New Frontier - Official Trailer (updated)

I loved the comic, so I am looking forward to the film.

Thw comic is about the founding of the Justice League. It takes place in the early 1960s, during the space race. Hence the title. .

  1. Uh…

We al know that The New Frontier IS coming out next Tuesday, February 26th, on DVD and Blu-Ray, right?  smile

Of course, I’m getting my copy on Blu-Ray for the old PS3.

I hope the film is okay with the editing down for length.  If anything, it should help focus the story more.  I DID have problems with Cooke seemingly not knowing what the story was about for an issue and two and he DOES let his liberal politics and conservaphobia get the better of him at times, too.

I don’t think the 1950s US was quite as bad as many left-wingers portray them.  There WERE good things going on back then, too.  If anything the 1960s were a hell of a lot worse and not the utopia and “Camelot” era people romanticise them into being.  People tend to think censorship cuts along only one political tract.  Sheesh!

Politics is generally my issue with Darwyn Cooke’s storytelling otherwise he does a fine job.

Cooke’s been a critical darling of people who run the awards ceremony for the comic industry but has unfortunately not been a huge seller for comic fans who prefer the Jim Lee and Neal Adams’ approach to comic art.  I really think the only “cartoony” artist who’s been a big seller in mainstream American comics has been Tim Sale with his Jeph Loeb collaborations on Batman and Superman.

Even Bruce Timm’s comics generally don’t sell that well and I consider him even better than Sale and Cooke..

  2. Yes, his political views are clich&ecute;d and typical of most comics writers these days. I just loved the style of the book and the general approach of it. But his writing had problems with the narrative and structure.

The 50s were nowhere near as bad as lefties make it. And they conveniently gloss over the horrors their heroes committed in those times. People like Che, Stalin, Castro, et al. Leftists are 10 times the monsters they make right wingers out to be.

It never seems to occur to them that American foreign policy in those times was a response to Soviet aggression and the cold war.

  3. Pretty soon, they’ll blame the Cold War woes on George W. Bush…

    /ugh

  4. I didn’t mind the social/political issues (I thought they were pretty well-handled, IMHO, like when Martian Manhunter/John Jones went to see a movie about space invaders, and didn’t take it seriously at all), but I’m glad it put superheroes in a positive light.  Sure, the story starts out negative, but has an INCREDIBLES kind of vibe to it as it builds up.

As someone else so aptly described, DC: THE NEW FRONTIER is the anti-WATCHMEN!

  5. The politics in the film STILL bugged me (and I really thought the whole pacifist Hal Jordan business was terribly naive) but this was still 10 times better than Superman: Doomsday.

Too bad the new DC OVA program had to start with Doomsday.  What a turd of a story that was to begin with.  There are a million stories better than that!

If you’re a Justice League fan, GET THIS FILM!

There’s also a decent documentary or two that gets people up to speed with the history of the Justice League as a published comic.  Definitely get the two-disc DVD release OR the Blu-Ray release.  In addition to all the extras on the single disc release, they have 3 episodes of the last Justice League animated series on them!  Better yet, the Best Buy stores 2-disc sets have an exclusive Green Lantern figurine packed in them.

Honestly, it’s a nice gift to fans and a much more cohesively held together than the original New Frontier comic.

BTW, HUD, the phrase “The New Frontier” has less to do with the space race and more to do with Kennedy’s domestic American program.  It’s sort of like The New Deal and The Square Deal but minus the socialistic baggage those programs had.  Actually, the closest thing to the latter two programs was Johnson’s “Great Society” which was god-awful.

  6. Personally, I enjoyed SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY more than the source material it was based on.  I thought Bruce Timm gave it more class (yeah, I’m aware of the bad stuff that happens in the film), whereas the original comic was pretty adolescent and cynical, totally reflecting the era it was published in.  But if you think I’m crazy for enjoying it, what can I say?  wink

Otherwise, I am SO looking forward to getting JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER!  I’d love to see how well it plays out in the film.
