Matt Roach: RIP

Jazz lost one of its greatest drummers Wednesday. Roach revolutionized percussion.

Max Roach.
I loved his “The Drum Also Waltzes” and so did many drummers.  Bill Bruford and Neil Peart covered it, amongst others.

I never got to hear Max Roach play live, but was fortunate enough to catch Buddy Rich several times. I highly recommend the CD “Rich versus Roach”—where both drummers get to show how astoundingly good they are.  It’s not really a competition as much as a style showcase.
