“Modified” People
I’m sure you must have seen those tatted and pierced types that took it a little too far. Here’s a whole bunch of them. Some I haven’t seen before. Makes you wonder what they were thinking, exactly. Ugh.
It cost these people a lot of money to look that bad.
I knew a guy who lives in Berkeley, CA; he knows many wackos who did stuff like this. He said it gets to be compulsive for them after awhile. Many of them reach a tipping point, and no longer seem to have any ability to control their compulsion. So, stuff like that in the link results.
I think it is sad; these people have very shallow, narcissistic lives.
Posted by on 08/24 at 12:20 PMThese people have a very strange idea of attractive. I’m sure when when people can grow antlers and so on, some of them will.
Posted by James Hudnall on 08/24 at 01:21 PMJim, one guy is planning to do just that--sort of. He’s stretching out the skin on his forehead with implants, and when it gets big enough, he’s going to put sterilized coral “horns” in. They should actually grow into his skull and be covered by bone. Then he’ll cut the skin off and...taa daa, horns.
That said, these guys better plan on moving to New Guinea when they turn 40.Posted by on 08/24 at 02:24 PMHey, remember how people modified themselves via “cosmetisurgury” in Samuel R. Delaney’s great space opera, “Babel 17”? Looks like we’re seeing the beginning of that process NOW. But where are those FTL spaceships, anyway?!
Not knowing any of the people displayed in the link, we can’t tell if they’re using their particular forms of self-modification like a weight-loss diet or a bodybuilding course to express their sense of self, or if they’re just sick, sad people.
For me, I can’t get into self-mutilation as a form of personal expression. No ink or piercings for me! My wife has three piercings in each ear lobe (somewhat common), and a small tatoo of a phoenix on her upper left arm (the art is displayed on her blog site), but nothing outlandish. Of course, a lot of people I know have extensive tats and/or piercings. Comes with living in San Francisco, I guess.
Posted by on 08/24 at 02:29 PMI never got that whole scene. It jst doesn’t appeal to me. Especially face piercing. Or trying to look like a primitive tribesman. Why would anyone want to look like a primitive? To me that’s so backward.
Of course, I have no problem with the idea of being transhuman and putting in bionic modifications or enhancements. But that’s to make yourself better or more capable.
Posted by James Hudnall on 08/24 at 04:19 PMJust imagine what these people will look like when they are older, and their skin looses its elasticity and sags, or if they put on or lose weight. They will need even more surgery, face lifts, and tucks. I remember seeing an older man with two moderate tattoos on his forearms; they were shapeless blobs and looked like smudges.

No topic should be banned from debate and no one should be banned from raising questions. While I get annoyed with 9/11 truthers or the like, I defend people’s rights to express their views and present their arguments.
Fanatics always try to shut down debate. And in these PC times, it’s amazing to see who wields the stick, so to speak.
One wonders how far it will go.
