More Nanny State Fascism
Zoning has been a tool of city halls for a long time. In the 70s and 80s they used them to close down adult book stores and topless bars. It’s fairly normal to keep industrial parks away from neighborhoods, for example. But now, L.A. wants to use it to shut down fast food joints.
Pointing south from the corner of Figueroa and Adams in South Central L.A., Tanisha Jackson says when it comes to fast food, her community “has it all.”
“If you want it cheap and quick – McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken – we’ve got it,” says the mother of two.
Some city officials see the myriad fast-food outlets as a health problem and are seeking change. “Fast food is primarily the only option for those who live and work here,” says City Councilwoman Jan Perry. “It’s become a public-health issue that residents be given healthier choices.”
She has introduced a two-year moratorium on new fast-food outlets in this part of the city, where small, single-family homes dominate and gangs thrive in a rough urban landscape.
Many national food and health experts say the measure – which is slated for a vote on Sept. 18 – may be the first example of a health-zoning law in the United States.
This is bogus on so many levels. First of all, these places offer jobs to people in this area that are largely rare. Secondly, all fast food companies have come out with healthy alternatives on their menus because of these obesity nazis. Third, fast food is inexpensive. People in these poor parts of town often can’t afford more than that if they want to eat out. They are basically taking away their options in the name of self righteousness. And finally, it’s entirely your choice what you eat. They’re trying to regulate your life. And that isn’t their job. It never was and it never should be.
California used to be a great place to live. But then every creep and loser from the 50 states and beyond came there and some of them got elected. Now, some of these people are taking their show on the road by moving to other states now that they ruined my state. It really sticks in my craw to see this kind of stuff going on there. People have to stand up to this nonsense. It’s really getting out of control.
I love the part where the nannys, apparently with a straight face, say the poor have no choice because they don’t have the time to make their own meals. Considering most of them are on welfare, I’d think they’d have nothing but time.
But that’s just me.
Besides, how long does it take to heat up a can of “Healthy Choice” soup?
These people probably started their jobs as anti-smoking apparatchiks, and with that fading away, they simply need a new crisis to keep them employed.Posted by on 09/13 at 07:38 PM
