No National ID!
Several States have been moving to block the Federal “Read ID” requirement, which I say is a good thing. Main already rejected it last week, leading the way. The Bush administration tends to go way too far in some area, and this is one of them.
Risking broad penalties for their residents, lawmakers in several states are fighting implementation of the Real ID Act, a federal measure that seeks to prevent non-compliant cardholders from boarding airplanes or entering federal facilities.
Opponents say national standards for drivers’ licenses would be a costly creep into the arms of big brother. Supporters say it is intended to protect Americans’ from fraud and potentially terror-related crimes.
“We don’t want it, we can’t afford it, get rid of it,” said Montana Democratic state Rep. Brady Wiseman, who authored the bill ordering the state not to participate in the federal program. The bill passed the Montana House of Representatives on Wednesday along with a companion measure, which challenges the Real ID law on constitutional grounds. Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer has spoken in favor of Wiseman’s bill.
I can see a lot of legit reasons for a real id. But the abuse aspects, the big brother and the control over people’s movements is downright Orwellian. The Feds have stripped away too many states rights. We need to see a return to more state rights and less Federal. Bush is one of the worst presidents when it comes to increasing the size of government bureaucracies. National Security during the war on terror is important. But so are civil liberties. We should never allow those to be stripped because it will be hard to get them back.
Will you accept a Colonel’s commission in the next War for Southern Independence or at least start with a Mint Julep......?!

Posted by Elton on 02/02 at 03:15 PMWhat broad penalties exactly are being risked?
Posted by on 02/02 at 03:54 PMAs late as the 80s, maybe early 90s, you could fly without proof of ID. You could book a flight for Fred Flintsone and present the ticket and no one would bat an eye. But in order to “catch criminals” they made everyone provide proof of ID before they could travel by air.
The argument is, someone could make a fake ID and still fly under a fictitious identity. Perhaps, but everything can be hacked. What it does is force everyone to have a national ID card, which can then be used to force us to identify ourselves whenever we do anything, which then means they can easily put people on no travel lists and so on to block freedoms. It also makes it even easier for them to track whatever people do, as if it wasn’t easy enough already.
Considering how terrorism is being so overblown in respect to their actual success rate, we’re giving up a lot of liberties because some bureaucrats claim it will protect us. But once you give up freedoms, they are loath to give them back.
Hence, the income tax was created as a temporary tax to fight a war few people can even name. And that was at the beginning of the 20th century. A bureaucrats idea of temporary is something to fear.

Also, our social security number was only to be used for SS and nothing more. Following is an example of how times have changed:
I served in Vietnam from 10/67 until 05/69 in the Army extending until that time in order to get out five months early. I had a civil service job lined up, which required me to be in-country in order to avoid the list of those who were waiting for a job there. I bought a .45 cal. derringer, put it in a Crown Royal bag which then went into my hip pocket. I flew on a commercial airline back to Saigon without a problem.
Posted by on 02/02 at 04:57 PMOh, yeah. Back then you could carry a gun on a plane, no problem. I believe they started using Metal detectors around 1969/70 because of hijackers. Then the whole Palestinian thing started up internationally with the Munich Olympics
