P.S.—Haven’t you heard urban legends about rivers in China so toxic they’ll burn a foot or hand off if you stick them into the water?

Our pollution was never this bad. But it was bad. In the 70s the River Charles caught on fire. And there was a lot of trash on the highways before they started clean-up crews. I remember all this, so when people tell me how bad we’re doing it annoys me. We have done a lot to clean things up. Even that river can be cleaned up.
