Oh, Brother

No marriage in comic books last. They can’t imagine how to make them work.

‘Spider-Man’
Spider-Man fans are up in arms over a new plot twist which erases the superhero’s 20-year marriage to wife Mary Jane.

Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said Peter Parker needed to return to his previous incarnation as a single geek in a bid to free him up for new adventures.

However, he admitted that fans had been outraged at the move, saying: “When we first did it, the reaction was, ‘How could you do this? This is a terrible thing to do.

“But with the first issue of ‘Brand New Day’ [this week’s edition in which Spider-Man becomes single], our letters very quickly changed to people saying, ‘This is fantastic. This is the Spider-Man we remembered. We didn’t know what we’d been missing’.”

The storyline sees the couple strike a bargain with the evil Mephisto in a desperate attempt to reverse an injury suffered by Parker’s Aunt May.

They agree that all memories of their romance will be wiped in exchange for May’s good health.

As far as breakups go, that has to be one of the weakest excuses I’ve seen.

  1. Lame.

    Lame.

    Lame.

I have a friend who had the idea that long running super-hero franchises should undergo a reboot every 10 years or so, in order to start the mythology over again fresh from the origin.

  2. That’s one problem with superhero comics. They go on forever. A ten year reboot isn’t a bad idea, though I can’t think of anything I’ve stayed with for that long.
Then again I’ve pretty much given up on the periodicals. If something looks interesting, I’ll pick up a compilation.

  3. And this is why Spider-Man only exists for me in comics as the first 40 issues of Amazing (Spider-Man) plus Amazing Fantasy 15..

After that, it pretty much doesn’t count.

The Marvel writers pretty much recycle the hell out of the plots of those old issues every so many years.

And yeah, for the millionth time, Marvel really has to get rid of the current crop of editors starting with Joey Q.

This is the best they could come up with to untangle the mess they’ve made of Spider-Man these past few years?

I expected them to retcon the marriage, but this is the best they could do with what was STILL a bad idea????

  4. Agree: lame, lame, lame.  And agree again: that’s why my Spidey collection begins with Amazing Fantasy #15 and ends with Amazing Spider-Man #50.
