Ouch of the Day

The Onion on Vista

  1. I hate those ads.  Too smarmy for my taste, and good way to get someone to switch, guys--by treating them like laughable losers.
I actually considered getting a Mac on my last computer buy, but two things stopped me.  First, I found out several of my key programs were not available for Mac, except running under their emulator, which is slow and not reliable.
Second, I subscribed to Macworld to “see how the other half lives.” It was a eye-opener I recommend to anyone considering a PC-Mac switch.  Despite what the Mac faithful say to PC users, Macs have plenty of problems, just like PCs, and in Macworld the reality comes out.  Buying a Mac will not magically make your computing life fast, easy, safe, and trouble-free.

  2. I agree, but this one is pretty accurate. Microshaft’s DRM beast will not taint my computer.

As for programs, Macs have alternatives to most PC programs that they don’t share.

Mac people can be really smug sometimes, which can be a turn off, and there are some things about Macs I don’t like (which is a whole ‘nother discussion). But I do respect the way they keep making them markedly better, unlike Windows machines

  3. Yeah, the DRM thing--while I personally deeply sympathize with the problems of digital piracy--is getting scary.  Intel’s next-gen chipsets are supposed to have DRM built into the hardware, which is double scary.
Jobs coming out against DRM means we can expect Macs to remain DRM-free in both hardware and software, and that alone may get me (and millions of others) to switch at some point in the future.
Time to buy Apple stock, I guess.

  4. Although, I’ve been thinking about making “the switch” for some time, it’s these ads which have convinced me to go ahead and do it.

  5. Switch to PC, you mean?  wink

  6. I agree with Toren those ads bother me as well. However, Macs are nice machines and they work very well with Verizon FiOS, which I install.

  7. Sooo, I got my Dell with Vista the first day it was available and I’m lovin’ it.  It’s fast and it’s pretty, and the new search feature is fabulous.

All my programs installed without a hitch.  The only thing that didn’t work immediately was a hotsync with my PDA, but I had that fixed within 10 minutes.

I guess I’m the odd man… err, woman, out.

  8. It’s fine if it comes preinstalled. I have heard one horror story after another with people trying to install it on an XP machine.

As far as the look and so on, Gates can thank Apple for that since that’s where all the ideas come from.
