Problems
For some reason my internet isn’t working on my main computer. I have spent hours trying to resolve the problem, which is why the postings are not there. I hope to have it fixed some time tonight. Argh.
UPDATE: Still couldn’t get my internet working after a day and a half with two help desks and one tech person I know trying to help. My friend, who is an expert sysadmin said it looked like a software problem of some kind that was preventing the network establishing an internet connection. He did not think it was hardware. The only thing I could think of was Norton Anti-virus had some kind of error where it claimed it couldn’t work at all, so I un-installed it as they said I would have to and tried to reinstall it without success. The next day (after a reboot) my internet connection wouldn’t work and no one could help me (I didn’t call Norton because I was feeling like Jackie Gleason at the time.) Now it’s working again. How did I do it?
This is a new computer I had built last month for me. It has a dual core Pentium 2.40Ghz processor, 2 gigs of ram, 1.5 terrabytes of hard drive. an NVidia 8800 Graphics card. The key is the hard drives. I have 3 500 gigabyte drives. One is a backup rive. It automatically backs up key files every week to that drive. All I did was a system restore to Sunday and viola! Problem solved. Now I know what to do next time. If you want a set up like that make sure you have a kick ass power supply. Mine is 800 watts.
Also, I am thinking of dumping Norton after this. It annoys me to have to pay them $50 a year to resubscribe. This article explains your alternatives and makes some good arguments.
