Flying at mach one without a plane or glider.

An amazing reunion story.

  1. Soaring at Mach 1 without a glider?

    Been done already, Hud.

An Air Force test pilot soared high into the atmosphere (over 100,000 feet) and jumped out of a gondola in a pressure suit.  This was done in the late 1950s or early 1960s.  There was footage of him jumping out of the gondola on a History Channel program.

As he fell through the thinner upper atmospheric air, he broke the speed of sound (over 660 mph).  As he broached the lower, thick atmospheric levels, he slowed down to traditional terminal velocity (around 200mph) and then parachuted safely.

He performed this feat around a half-dozen times or more.

Now, somebody else wants to TRIPLE that speed record.  The problem is getting a human being above 300,000 feet without a fuel-guzzling rocket and designing a suit that’s stronger and can resist higher temperatures than any space suit designed!  Falling to Earth at Mach 3+ is going to generate far more frictional heat than Mach 1 and there just isn’t a suit built yet to resist that kind of heat for that many miles up.  Remember, 300k feet is OVER 60 miles straight up!
