REVIEW: Persepolis

image

I finally got around to watching this French animated film based on a graphic novel about a young Iranian girl named Marjane Satrapi, who grew up during the Iranian revolution and the Iran/Iraq war. It’s a fascinating tale and gives a peek into the average Iranian’s life. Marjane loves rock music and western culture. She ends up spending some time in Vienna only to find the Europeans she meets there are jaded and take their freedoms for granted. A return to Iran shows her how repressive the religious regime is, and how it’s keeping the Iranians down trodden. Before, she didn’t realize how bad it was because that was all she knew.

I recommend the film. It’s always good to try to see how other people live in places you only hear limited things about, so you can get an appreciate for their problems. If this film is any indication, the people of Iran would like to live the way we do. Hopefully, someday they will be able to.
