REVIEW: The Lives of Others

Last night I watched this incredible German film which is out on DVD now. I highly recommend it. The story is about the lives of people in East Germany during the end of the Cold War and what it was like for them living under the Socialist Police State. The story concerns a writer and his actress girlfriend. A powerful Communist party leader wants to girlfriend, so he has the Stasi (the East German Secret Police) spy on him because, even though he is a model citizen in their eyes, he is “too good” and therefore must be bad. One of the agents sent to spy on him come sto like them both a lot and sympathizes even as he observes every aspect of their lives from hios secret listening post.

The movie shows how horrible life was under a Socialist regime where the people have no privacy. Quite frankly, it should serve as a lesson toi those who think Socialism is good. And also, a warning of what happens when governments get too powerful.

I highly recommend it.

  1. On the socialism rampage again, are we?! (bitter much?)

You think this movie (which I saw way back) should serve as a warning against Socialism? How about a warning against how the US governmant operates today. The Homeland Security is somewhat similar to the Stasi, in the way that they can do pretty much what the hell they want - you think you have any privacy today? If the H.S. thinks you are a “terrorist” (ie someone who dosn’t act like they think you should) you’ll have a bug up your ass before you can say “freedom of speech” - and it will be all legal, because that’s how your beloved rightwing paranoid goverment has taken a big dump on you and your precious rights.
    Don’t talk Socialism, dude ...
