RIP: Charlton Heston

He was the star of many sci-fi films of my youth, from Planet of the Apes, the Omega Man to Soylent Green. And who can forget the 10 Commandments and Ben Hur. He was reviled by lefties for being a conservative and a gun rights advocate (and former head of the NRA). Michael Moore tried to make home look bad in his bogus Bowling for Columbine crockmentary, but it was later revealed that most of that film was either taken out of context or fabricated nonsense, including the scenes of Heston giving NRA that Moore claimed was in Columbine right after the tragedy there.  It wasn’t.

Some people like to mock his acting, but I liked him. I especially love Planet of the Apes. It was so revolutionary when it came out. I still think its a great film,

  1. I was saddened to hear about this.  I liked Charlton Heston.  THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is still one of my favorite movies, too (especially for the FX and epic scale).

And yeah, I was outraged to see how he was treated in BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE (which I thought was meanspirited).  I was glad Clint Eastwood came to his defense!  ("If you ever come to my door with a camera . . . “)

    Sleep well, Charlton.

  2. It’s really sad how the media completely ignored his Civil Rights involvement in the 60s.  Instead, we’ve got people like Micheal Moore portraying him as scary old evil whiteman.

  3. Yeah, he started out as a liberal. But he was a conservative when he marched with King.

  4. Unlike many of his opponents, Heston had class.

Before Shatner, he proved that you could turn epiphets into nicknames and not-so-classic films into tour-de-force’s and cult classics.

But mostly, he was the definitive Biblical epic actor of the 1950s and had an unshakeable view on personal liberties.

How can you NOT say the world is poorer for his passing?

I’m gonna miss him, but I DO think he’s in a better place.  Far better to pass quickly now than spend another agonizing second under the relentless drum of Alzheimer’s.

  5. Looks like Michael Moore posted a photo of Charlton on his site, without anything bad to say.

Guess he’s a good sport, after all!
