Sicko

Don’t know hopw long this will be good for, but here’s Michael Moore’s new film. I watched part of it. It seems a lot better made than his earlier stuff. I do think he makes a huge mistake claiming Canada and Cuba have it better. But I’ll get into that when I have time to watch it all. 

You can tell Michael Moore has never actually been seriously ill in Canada.  He’s never had to wait two to three years to get an operation, only to have some bureaucrat lose the paperwork, forcing the patient to wait another two to three years.  And I don’t think he’s had to wait a year to get an MRI done either.

I can only imagine what it’s like in Cuba.  Especially since Castro had to fly in docs from Spain because the local boys almost killed him.

Not that Canada or Cuba has a good system, but our current system sucks big time. Moore makes some very good points in this film. Unfortunately, they will probably be lost by people upset about the Cuba thing.

Watch the movie & listen to the stories of the everyday Americans. That’s where the strength of this film lies. It’s where the whole system of health care in this country is royally screwed up.

And this is being said by someone who is no fan of Moore’s at all.

Writing from Canada now.

It took 2 weeks for me to get an MRI and I was in no desperate need.

I’ve had a few friends who were very ill and have had medical care that would have cost a fortune in the US, all for free.  Their lives were saved and never put at risk by our system. They have only good things to say about our health care.

It is frustrating when I hear things that bear no resemblance to the reality I live in.

“Free,” huh.  When did Canada become a country with no taxes?  ‘Cause if that’s the case, I’ll move back and put up with the lame medical care again.
To remind you once again: I lived there for 22 years.  Don’t try to flim-flam me about what the medical system there is like, because I KNOW.  And with my entire family still there, the knowledge is subject to regular updates.

I agree, Moore did make a pretty good film from what I saw. He makes the mistake of letting his socialist slip show.

But the US system needs a lot of fixing. Still, many Canadians come to the US for their health care even though people like Moore claim Canada’s is so great. (Hi, Micah)

As someone who has expirienced the two systems, I would love to hear a little more as to what you think the Pros and Cons of each system are.  Obviously neither are perfect, but I would be curious as to what all the real trade offs are.

I could do without the sarcasm.  I think people understand it is a system based on taxes.  I stand by everything I said.  Again, it’s pretty galling to somehow be called a liar when I know people of little means who overcame serious illnesses. 

Having said that, people with money do go to the US if they don’t want to wait.  There is no getting around the fact that those who have money will get faster and better medical service than those who don’t (and better legal service and better everything else) one way or another.  But Canada does a better job of offsetting that gap than the US.

Unfortunately, this somehow becomes a battle of socialism vs. capitalism.  Michael Moore I’m sure won’t make this any less of a partisan issue.  But why not look at some of the good things about the medical systems in Canada, or Cuba or France?  Apparently France has a better medical system than Canada.
