Smackdown Dujour
So much is made of violence in movies and video games begetting violence in real life. I don’t know of anyone who went on a rampage with a samurai sword after seeing Kill Bill.
It amazes me that some folks cannot tell the difference between reality and fantasy. I loved the classic WB cartoons, but I KNEW that what happened to the Coyote wasn’t real. It was slapstick. I KNEW that you didn’t just get your feathers blackened by a shotgun.
I did target shooting with a rifle in Indian Guides. They shot a bleach bottle filled with water, and then showed it to everyone there. “This is what could happen to someone’s head. NEVER aim at a person.” I learned that lesson. To this day, I treat ALL guns as if they were loaded - because I know what COULD happen with an “unloaded gun”.
I know the difference between escapist fantasy (Kill Bill) and what a REAL sword can REALLY do. My sensei had an actual katana - Japanese steel. He would allow us to examine it in HIS presence only, and NEVER to use it in a training exercise or in kata. He sliced a watermelon into chunks with three fast swings. We knew it was a weapon to be admired for its contruction and respected and feared for what it could do to flesh and blood. It most definately was NOT a toy.
Tarantino’s right - kids are smart, and know the difference...except the graffiti taggers. Those guys are ALL idiots.
