The Music Industry Finally Gets It

They’re making songs downloadable for free. And I think this was a wise move. They will start to see real profits when they work out a way for them to make money through advertising.

Suing endless people was only costing them money and yielding little results. It won’t be long before the movie business is forced to follow suit.

As a creative person, I want to make money from my work, but I don’t fear that I won’t now. Rather, I think this will make it easier in many ways. The sports industry feared televised sports in the 60s because they thought free games on TV would somehow make them lose money. It had the opposite effect. I think the same will apply to free music downloads. More people will be exposed to the music, and they will spend money in other ways that will enrich everyone concerned.

  1. Nice post, this clear trend seems to become more and more widespread. It could be seen not only in music industry but in many other spheres, such as for example software development, where market share of opensource products is growing constantly.
