There Should be a Stupidity Tax
Once again Democrats and anti-smoking fanatics prove their stupidity with yet another attempt to tax smoking out of existence. And the excuse? To fund a health care program for children. Oh, yes..."it’s for the children.”
The increase in federal tobacco taxes that congressional Democrats are proposing to fund their new healthcare initiative is being praised by anti-smoking advocates as an effective way to discourage tobacco sales.
“We are strongly in favor of the SCHIP proposal,” Erika Sward, director of National Advocacy for the American Lung Association, told Cybercast News Service. “We see it as a win-win for children’s health.”
“The first win is that the cigarette tax will be increased by 61 cents, which will have a significant impact on youth smoking rates,” she said. “And the other win is that millions of children, including those with lung disease, will be able to have health insurance as a result.”
The tax hikes would include raising the federal cigarette tax from 39 cents to one dollar. Additionally, the tax cap on cigars would be raised from five cents to three dollars, a 6,000 percent increase.
So, they want to cut smoking by raising taxes, but they want to raise taxes on smoking to pay for some “plan”. If you cut smoking, that will reduce tax revenues. But this is the Dems classic technique. Raise taxes and say it benefits children. Even though, 99.999% of th etime, taxes raised for “the children” usually goes into something else.
But here’s the kicker. They keep relying on tobacco taxes to fund things, yet they have this goal to end smoking. Tell me, do you really think they will end those programs they start once the tax money dries up? Think about it.
They move it over to something else. Maybe junk food. Maybe something else you like, such as alcohol or energy use. And them your shrug that you don’t smoke, so you don’t care if they tax smokers suddenly becomes an issue for you. about its too late.
And the problem with this madness is that it kills jjobs and businesses.
“Get ready for a $100 box of Macanudos to go to $180,” Corona warned. “A box of Punch Rothschilds to go from $110 a box to $170. And this is a BEST CASE SCENARIO. ... If you live in a state that also has a state cigar tax, you better hold on to your wallets because the price of your cigars may triple.”
“[U]nless every one of you doesn’t mind paying 53% more for your cigars, the cigar industry is facing a total collapse,” stated Corona.
Now, you may say: “So what? I hate cigar smoke.”
Well, today they may come after cigar smokers. But wait until they set their self righteous eye on something else to tax. Success in this kind of extremism only encourages more of the same.
I HATE, HATE smoking.
I think the reason why many smoking prohibitions have passed in the U.S. is because of many smokers’ lack of consideration for people who DON’T like to breathe fouled air or non-smokers just hate the sight of people sucking on burning tobacco. I, for one, also can’t stand it when I see some idiot smoking by the gas pumps at the gas station, too!
That said, I’m with Hud on this one.
Anybody with an ounce of intelligence knows the tax money isn’t going where the politicians say it will.
Again, they’re using the old refrain “BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN!” while at the same time dodging the whole issue of how irresponsibly they’re spending the money of OURS that that we’ve already given them!

You’re not annoyed by smokers, you’re annoyed by rude and stupid people who happen to express their rudeness and stupidity through cigarettes instead of their cell phones, driving, etc.
But I really don’t think ignoring “non-smokers [who] just hate the sight of people sucking on burning tobacco” qualifies as rude. I’m a VERY considerate smoker and if someone asked me to stop because they simply didn’t like the sight of me smoking, I’d tell them to shove it up their ass.Posted by on 10/19 at 09:15 PM
