This Also Bugs Me

I’m sure by now you’ve got a sense of what some of my pet peeves are if you’ve been reading this blog. Here’s another one that really gets on my nerves. In fact, anyone who knows me will hear me complain about it. All the good land is being bought up so no one else can afford any nearby. It’s like monopoly.

Here’s a classic example. If ever there was a reason to hate Arabs, here’s another.

  1. “If ever there was a reason to hate Arabs, here’s another.”

What the hell kind of retarded, redneck racist remark is that?!?
Do you really “hate” arabs? Why???
I wonder if the reason this Prince Bandar is getting under your skin, is because he has waaay much more money than you’ll ever see? Jealousy is an ugly thing.

    Come on ...

  2. You think too literally. That was what they call a snarky comment.

The fact is, when people with too much money spend insane amounts of money on real estate it makes the market totally unreachable to people who had no problem living there a generation ago. It’s people like Bandar that drove up real estate prices so high in markets like that one by over paying for land. That whole trend started in the 80s with rich Japanese over paying for places in LA. And the Arabs also were trowing around huge sums of cash because they could. Things just got worse from there.

This country is becoming like 18th century Europe. It’s ridiculous.

  3. Yeah, this problem really started to be a real issue about 10 or 15 years ago.  I was looking for some nice property in a scenic location and quickly found it that anywhere nice was unbelievably expensive, or simply unavailable.  I checked in the Sierras and in the Kananaskis area of Alberta, and was astounded.  Prices were insane, when anything was available at all.  When I was up in Alberta recently my dad told me that land in the Kananaskis was simply unavailable at any price these days.  There aren’t many ultra-rich in America, but when they buy land, price is not much of an object, so they tend to buy it in huge chunks (see Ted Turner for an example).

  4. “That was what they call a snarky comment.”

Really? And what exactly did you mean by it ... nevermind that whole “rich people buy the land so I can’t afford it"-buhuu-crap, I actually got that part of it, what I don’t understand was the remark about the arabs…

  5. Well Bob, if you are that literal minded that you don’t understand sarcasm. I don’t hate Arabs. But rich Arabs who drive up real estate prices and don’t even live in the over priced mansions they buy, are basically making nice places unavailable even to people who can normally afford to buy good property.

Tell me, how is the argument presented “bull crap”?

Why should all the nice places be only affordable to the rich? Especially when the rich don’t even live in most of their places.

I mean, I am not poor. Neither is Toren, who just gave a taste of his experience. In some of these places you have to be mega rich to afford them. That’s just wrong.

  6. As I stated in post #4, I understand how annoying it is that real estate prices are way up there ... that is not the problem.

My problem is with your “sarcasm” ... It dosn’t “read” like sarcasm, when it is joined together with something that “really bugs you” - then it’s simply a statement - a racist statement.  There is nothing in your post that implies that you were being sarcastic. Don’t you see that?

Sarcasm: “… a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound[1] — stating the opposite of the intended meaning” (wikipedia)

So you actually meant the opposite?

  7. It always cracks me up how some people get bent out of shape over a throw away line. Calling me a racist redneck while defending rich assholes who buy up all the choice land so ordinary people can’t live there anymore. That’s the height of hilarity right there.

Sorry, but I’m not going to explain myself further. It was just a joke. Obviosuly, it went over your head.

  9. Hey Bob, how much you wanna bet there’s no directional marker anywhere on that complex toward Mecca?

  11. Comment 11 is spam, in case you missed it, Jim.
So much for Turing words.  Wonder how they got around that?
    Time for registration, I guess.
    God, I hate spammers.

  12. Yeah, I haven’t deleted it yet. They have to manually do it or there would be a lot more. I see them whenever a comment appears, so it’s hard for them to get by me. I was just occupied today. Clearing out old boxes in my Garage and putting stuff I want to keep in plastic storage bins.

I found a lot of stuff from the 80s in there. Lots of memories from old CFO programs to letts from old girlfriends.
