Today’s Elections
I was sorry to see that Fred Thompson failed to win South Carolina today. He only came in third. But Ron Paul came in second in Nevada!
This isn’t totally a surprise. Nevada is a fairly libertarian place. It also has a large Mormon population, which is why Romney’s win was expected.
So what does this mean for Fred? He only came in third, but he beat Romney in SC. If I were him, I’d stay in through Super Tuesday. At the very least he could collect delegates and use them as a bartering tool when it comes time to decide the candidate.
Huckabee is probably dead as a candidate at this point. Even though he came in a close second in SC, he should have won. That’s one of the best places to run if you want the evangelical vote. Thompson seems to have stolen some of his thunder. I suspect he will continue to do so if he stays in the race.
There could be another surprise in the next few primaries, but it’s looking like it’s going to be a Mitt vs McCain race. McCain has the edge. Republicans have a tendency to nominate the “next in line” politician. McCain is “next in line” after Bush. At this time the Republicans need to shake things up a little. They desperately need to regain the publics’ confidence. McCain has a lot of negatives for many conservatives, so we’ll see how long he stays ahead. But he might possibly win over independents and some Democrats who hate Hillary.
Giuliani seems to be down for the count. If he doesn’t do well in Florida, he might as well join Duncan Hunter and leave the race.
So what about Paul? His strong showing in Nevada will probably be ignored by the media, but it’s impressive. And you have to wonder how he does on Super Tuesday. He seems to be very popular here in Washington and Oregon. I see more signs for Ron Paul than any other candidate, Democrat or Republican. That may be an unscientific observation, but he seems to be more popular than the media wants us to believe.
It’ll be interesting to see what new attacks on Paul’s character will come out in light of this showing.
UPDATE: CNN tells a lie about who in second place. And all the CNN viewers like to pick on FOX news.
McCain is a VERY blue RINO. With a spraygun full of red watercolors. If he wins, why bother voting? I will, just to keep the worst possible thing that could happen to our country from happening, but for damn sure not because that’s who I want in the Oval Office. It’s not MUCH better, but it is better.
Posted by cmblake6 on 01/20 at 06:14 AMThe only way McCain gets my vote is to have Fred as his VP. Do not forget that McCain called all of us that want border security bigots. No Fred, no vote.
I probably would vote for Mitt, but I’d surely have to hold my nose.Posted by on 01/20 at 07:21 AMMcCain is the only Republican in the race who doesn’t think English should be the official language of the US. Plus he favors the Amnesty bill. The public is overwhelmingly against this, but he refuses to change his opinion. He’s a stubborn old fool.
But, to his credit, he is a real fiscal conservative.
I would rather have him than Hillary, so I would vote for him if that was the choice.
